On Sunday we reported Atlético was set to sign Elias from Corinthians. Although the midfielder has already publicly said his goodbyes in Brazil, neither club has officially confirmed the transfer as of yet.

But nothing seems to be getting in the way of a transfer, now that Elias’ father has confirmed his son will arrive in Madrid on the 3rd of January to undergo a medical examination.

The player will first take a 20 day vacation before joining Atleti in the new year. His father, Eliseu, assured AS that we won’t have to worry about the 25 year old’s weight. The player wants to be in great condition in order to impress Quique Sánchez Flores.

“He is eager to play in the Vicente Calderón and enjoy the great and passionate crowd,” his father said. “He’s also excited to be able to play with Agüero, Forlán and Reyes.”

The Uruguayan admitted to El Mundo Deportivo that he knew next to nothing about Elias. “I don’t know him,” said Forlán. “Hopefully he will join us as soon as possible, and we hope that he will be a good addition to the squad and that he adapts quickly. Fortunately, there are Brazilian and Portuguese players here that will be able to ease him into his arrival.”

Our Brazilian players were relied upon the most by the rest of the first team in order to divulge more details on their soon-to-be teammate.

With Paulo Assunção, Diego Costa and Filipe already on board, Elías adds to our growing Brazilian contingent. He will hope to have better luck than former Rojiblanco compatriots Fabiano Eller, Thiago Motta and Cléber Santana, who failed to make an impression while in Madrid.

But there’s one Canary who was able to steal the hearts of many Colchoneros, and his name has come up on numerous occasions with the Elias signing. The Atleti faithful hope the new Brazilian central midfielder can bring back the midfield flair we’ve been missing since Juninho’s brief stay with the club.

The 2002 World Cup champion spent two seasons at the Vicente Calderón, dazzling football enthusiasts across Spain before his spell was hampered by an injury sustained from a vicious Míchel Salgado challenge.

According to Real Madrid left back Marcelo, who knows Elias from the Brazilian national team, Atlético have made a shrewd signing.

“He’s a very good player. I’m not able to compare him to anyone, because he’s a unique player with his own style,” he said.

“He can win possession and then knows what to do with the ball. He’s also capable of arriving in the opposition’s box and scoring goals from midfield.”

I hope he really is an improvement over Mario or Tiago, otherwise it’s wasted millions once again…

If he’s a very creative CM, he could come in handy, but why not try Koke? For him it’s great and he might positively surprise us all! Now it will take a while before he gets a real chance: Mario, Garcia and Elias are all relatively young…

Great Atletico site! I tend to visit the spanish “colchoneros” website and very rarely come across english sites with up to date info about Atleti.

Now, concerning Elias I have seen a few games from Corinthians (paulista state championship/brasilian championship) and he’s a solid player. Reminds me of bit of Hernanes but more pace and vision. However, he lacks experience at the top level seeing as how Corinthians was in the 2nd division a year ago. But, if he can contribute the same way Hernanes has done for Lazio all the Atleti fans will be lauding him with respect. He does seem the type to give 110% on the field and I have a good feeling that he will be a relvelation in 2011 for us.
