According to AS, Atlético will reduce the amount of club sponsored events to be attended by David de Gea, following a string of shoddy performances by the young goalkeeper.

Club personnel are concerned that David’s role as the new Atleti poster child is starting to detrimentally affect his play, given his observable dip in form.

The 20-year old’s status as a homegrown talent, coupled with his sensational displays between the sticks in the second half of last season and earlier on in our current campaign, have rendered him a hot commodity throughout Madrid.

The Spanish youth international has taken centre-stage at function-upon-function, stealing a chunk of the limelight previously reserved for team-mates Sergio Agüero and Diego Forlán. Attention has also come in the form of interest from several big-name outfits throughout Europe, most notably, from Manchester United.

The Rojiblanco coaching staff would like for the still maturing De Gea to fix his attention exclusively on goalkeeping, so that he may spring back to top form quickly.

  • Is that really the reason? I doubt it, although it’s hard to come up with something else…

Now he can’t make mistakes anymore, he’s 20, so he now it’s just learning (through experience) how to handle the pressure.
