Atlético host Universidad de Las Palmas in the return leg of the Copa del Rey tonight.
Only a couple of days ago our B-team played the Gran Canarians, and gave away a 2-0 lead in the last minutes of the game.
It is expected some of the Atlético B players will be handed an opportunity to take a little revenge for what felt like a defeat, as they have been included in the match selection.
Jorge Pulido, Koke, Alberto Perea and Iago Herrerín have all been called up by Quique Sánchez Flores and will likely feature at some point in this match.
Koke was one of Atlético B’s best players on the weekend and scored a cracking goal. Despite heavy competition in midfield it’s expected he will play a key part.
There were rumours in Madrid that Sergio Asenjo would return to the match selection. The young goalkeeper, last season’s big summer signing, has returned to training after recovering from a ligament injury which kept him out for over six months.
But Quique Sánchez Flores has decided not to take any risks with Asenjo and called up Iago instead. The young goalkeeper came over from Athletic Bilbao this past summer and is Atlético B’s number one. Another surprise inclusion is that of Juanito. We had almost forgotten the veteran defender is still cashing Atlético’s checks every week.
Atlético takes a 5-0 lead into this return leg and coach Quique Sánchez Flores will surely take this chance to give some of the reserves a run.
The goals two weeks ago were scored by Diego Godín, Sergio Agüero (2), Diego Costa and Fran Mérida. The latter is a player that should be kept an eye on in this match, as he’ll surely want to impress. So far Mérida hasn’t been able to play a large role for Atlético this season.
Agüero, who scored a brace in the first leg, will be absent as he is currently suffering from the flu. Other key players such as De Gea, Domínguez, Reyes, Simão and Forlán are being rested.
Goalkeepers: Joel, Iago
Defenders: Valera, López, Filipe, Juanito, Perea, Pulido
Midfielders: Mario Suárez, Camacho, Raúl García, Fran Mérida, Assunção, Koke
Forwards: Diego Costa, Alberto Perea
The match kicks off at 9 PM CET but sadly won’t be televised.
