Atlético B give away 3 points in last 5 minutes

Fer and Koke score, but Atlético Madrid B fail to take all 3 points

A day from now, Atlético hosts Universidad de Las Palmas in the Copa del Rey, but first the Gran Canarians visited the Cerro del Espino, where they took on Atlético B in a league match.

Our second team seemed on its way to a much needed win, but threw it all away in the last five minutes of the match.

The spectators must have been confused when the visitors came out of the locker room in Atlético’s away kit. Universidad’s equipment had been lost at Barajas Airport, but thankfully the players had their boots with them. With a little help from Atlético the match went underway with both teams playing in our colours.

Once more, a true striker was sorely missed by Atlético B, but our two central midfielders got us up to a comfortable lead. First it was Fer who converted a penalty which was won by left-back Javi Cantero.

And in the second half Koke, who’s also part of the first team, doubled the lead with a magnificent strike from outside the box that touched the post before it went in.

The two goalscorers were the stand out performers. With the midfield duo in full flow Atlético B went on in search of a third goal, but Noguera and Saúl were unable to finish their chances making for a dramatic ending.

Five minutes before the end Aridane scored after Atleti’s defenders had failed to clear the ball. Two minutes later Ángel Sánchez was fouled inside the box and the captain converted the penalty kick himself handing Universidad an undeserved draw. Despite sharing a point it felt like our B-team lost the match.

Atlético Madrid B’s next match is against Celta B, while Universidad travel to the Vicente Calderón on Wednesday. Surely our first team will be able to take revenge for the two points lost in the Cerro del Espino. The cup match kicks off at 9 PM CET.

Given the match selection of the Copa del Rey game, it looks like Quique will be giving the B team a second chance to win.

I think both Koke and Perea will play another game and Pulido his first one for the first team.

We’ve won the away game 0-5, so we have a little flexibility and these are players that are ready to step it up, now the rest of the B-squad, usually the defense was good enough, but now we’ve conceded two, so perhaps they had a bad day?
