In the ninth round of la Liga we welcome UD Almería to the Vicente Calderón.
It’s the fourth time the two teams have met in Madrid and in the previous three matchups the crowd was entertained with plenty of goals. Atlético have scored a total of eleven goals in home matches against Almería, with Diego Forlán finding the back of the net in every single game.
Almería themselves have scored an impressive five goals in the Calderón, but have taken just one point from the previous games. Last season’s match ended in dramatic fashion as Argentine Pablo Piatti scored an 89th minute equaliser.
The great debate in Madrid is whether to start Diego Forlán over Diego Costa, but this morning all attention was on Diego Godín, when we learned that he will be sidelined through injury in the coming weeks.
We’ve had no luck at all this season regarding injuries, but thankfully Álvaro Domínguez seems to have recovered in time to take Godín’s place. Another defender, Juan Valera, returned to training yesterday but is apparently not yet ready to play as he has been left out of the match selection by Quique Sánchez Flores.
The coach has also decided to keep Juanito out of the team, which leaves us with just five available defenders. If Quique decides not to take risks with Domínguez, we might see Antonio López at rightback again, like in Wednesday’s cup game against Universidad de Las Palmas.
Goalkeepers: De Gea, Joel
Defenders: López, Filipe, Ujfalusi, Domínguez, Perea
Midfielders: Mario, Tiago, Camacho, Raúl García, Fran Mérida, Assunção, Reyes, Simão
Forwards: Forlán, Agüero and Diego Costa.
Almería are 16th in the league table with just seven points, but will have received a boost in morale after this week’s Copa del Rey performance against Real Sociedad.
Away in Anoeta, Almería fell 2-0 behind, only to turn it all the way around with three goals in the last half hour, taking home a 2-3 win.
Almería are a team filled with Argentines, and Atleti will definitely have to keep an eye on José Leonardo Ulloa and Pablo Piatti, two very capable forwards.
Almería match selection
Goalkeepers: Diego Alves, Esteban
Defenders: Míchel, Juanma Ortiz, Acasiete, Carlos García, Marcelo Silva, Jakobsen
Midfielders: Bernardello, M’Bami, Fabían Vargas, Corona, Ortíz Bernal, Crusat

Of course there’s one more thing to keep in mind for our players; next week’s league match against Real Madrid in the Santiago Bernabeú.
Quique Sánchez Flores warned his players to focus on the Almería match, but Paulo Assunção for one will have to be on his toes. The Brazilian midfielder has collected four yellow cards in la Liga so far and will be suspended for the Derbi Madrileño if he goes into the book again.
