Atlético put another three points on the board today after a convincing 2-0 win over local rivals Getafe. A goal in each half was enough to secure the victory and return to winning ways after a disappointing start to October.
After the Sevilla game Quique Sánchez Flores admitted he made a tactical error by playing a 4-2-3-1 formation. Today the Atlético coach decided to use Reyes as the second forward.
More changes to the line-up were made with Agüero and Domínguez unavailable, and Forlán and Godín not quite match fit.
In defence Valera played his first match of the season while Fran Mérida again started on the right wing.
Atlético and their changed lineup got off to a slow start and it was clear the team needed a little time to gel. Valera broke through on the right wing once, but his cross was blocked out by Cata Díaz.
Getafe on the other end did find gaps and could have gone ahead. Former Atlético winger and current Getafe captain Manu del Moral was frequently allowed to cut inside from the left wing and tried to curl it passed De Gea with his right foot. The ball was very close to clipping the outside of the post.
His teammate Adrián Colunga was also allowed to shoot, but twice found De Gea in his way.
The 30 minute mark came and went, and Atlético took control and threatened Jordi Codina.
Within the space of five minutes, Simão twice cut inside but first found a defender and then Codina on his way.
But in the 38th minute Codina ended up helping our Portugese winger break the deadlock. Simão curled a beautiful free kick in that bounced off the inside of the post and then off of Codina to go into the back of the net.
Casquero’s entrance in the second half inspired Getafe to move forward. Within 30 seconds after coming on, the Atlético youth product had an excellent opportunity to equalise but his shot went just wide.
Getafe were able to push Atlético back, but only threatened De Gea with shots from outside the area.
In the 66th minute, Quique Sánchez Flores brought on Diego Forlán in place of Fran Mérida, shifting Reyes to his usual position on the right wing.
From there Reyes created Atlético’s second goal in the 72nd minute with a magnificent through ball to Juan Valera, who did very well to run onto Codina and then laid it back for Diego Costa, who doubled our lead with ease.
A couple of minutes earlier Forlán had tried to reach Diego Costa, but the referee didn’t see that Cata Díaz tripped the Brazilian from behind. Had the ref seen it, he surely would’ve given the defender his second yellow card and Atlético a penalty.
Reyes himself came close to a goal, but he curled it inches wide of the far post. The match ended 2-0.
Line-up: De Gea; Valera, Perea, Ujfalusi, Filipe; Assunção, Tiago; Fran Mérida, Reyes, Simão; and Diego Costa.
Subs: Forlán (“66), Raúl García (“85) and Mario Suárez (“89)
Goals: 1-0 Simão; 2-0 Diego Costa
Today’s win takes us above Getafe in the league table. It’s good to see that at least we’re winning all our games against weaker la Liga sides this season, but next weekend we have to travel to El Madrigal to face Villarreal in what will surely be a cracker.
