Atlético Madrid are now in to the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals after winning 4-2 on aggregate over Bayer Leverkusen in the Round of 16.

The second-leg finished in a 0-0 draw and now Diego Simeone’s men have put themselves in prime position to challenge further on the European front with their domestic campaign aspirations all but lost.

Watch the video below as Carlo Valladares and AtleticoFans.com give you their five takeaways from Wednesday’s match:

I agree very much on the analysis of Thomas. Like many people in here I think he has the upper hand on Saul right now. At it is very nice too see his drive with the ball. When he gets the ball in midfield he can dribble a player and really drive the ball forward in speed. None of our other CMs can do that. So I hope he gets some more minutes this season.

Btw how nice was the UCL draw! I don’t think it could have worked out better for us. Great that the 4 “giants” were paired already.

  • Silver

He needs to work on his passing though.

  • Let me know what you think and let me know what else you want us to cover via video!

  • AnonX

Agreed, best draw but we shouldn’t let our guard down against a similarly built counter-attacking team.
Our attacking edge could prove the difference.

By the way another good video Carlo.

  • Vagabond Messi

I think We need to sign Fabinhio from Monaco, he can be long term replacement for Gabi. We were linked with him last summer but for some reason deal couldn’t materialise , also he never misses a penalty. What a miss it was on our part.

  • Pep Guardiola

    You already have good players.

    Correa
    Gaitan-Griezmann-Koke-Carrasco
    Thomas
    Lucas-Gimenez-Godin-Vrsaljko
    Oblak

That’s the line up I would go with if I managed this team.

  • AndersAT

Definitely a tough matchup. They beat Sevilla, so they are dangerous. We don’t want this ending out in a penalty shootout either, so we have to score some goals. Especially dangerous that the last game is at their home, a very intense place. But I think our cynicism in these knockouts will bring us through to the next round. I am looking forward to it.

And how about Monaco for a attacking team. They are so fun to watch. I hope we get to play them to see their style of play against ours. It would be a fun final 🙂

  • Maura

Good analysis, especially about Thomas, Jan Oblak, and Vrsaljko. Thomas and Vrsaljko are really quite good! Thomas has excellent ball handling skills and Vrsaljko does a better job getting forward and his crosses are better than Juanfran’s. There was just one minor thing. Jan Oblak’s first name is not pronounced “Jan.” In Slavic languages, like Slovenian,
the J is pronounced like a Y and the A is like the A in “father.” So his first name would be pronounced “Yon.”

I am looking forward to seeing more videos from you.

  • AnonX

Yes it should. We can learn much from how they mobilize their attacking play.

  • AnonX

    VAMOS Atleti !!!

  • Vagabond Messi

No pre match thread ? What’s our injury status for this match?

  • Maura

I was wondering the same thing. There have not been any updates in the past few weeks.

  • AndersAT

The administrators are probably tired of the tone in here. I really do not blame them if that is the case. It really has been a less pleasant place to discuss these last months.

But great to see good things happen for us these last few weeks.

  • Vagabond Messi

I think they’ve too much work in their hand and all old writers are busy.

  • Maura

I can understand that. Even though I read the articles and comments more than I post, the talk about midget strikers and blaming Saul for all of the evil in the world was really getting over the top. But I have enjoyed reading the comments and analysis from the old-timers on here.

I hope that Atletico’s run of good luck continues and that Gabi can lift the Champions League trophy this year.

  • Jeronamo Pakor Jones

I’m not sure why it is but sometimes we can really struggle to play good football

  • Jeronamo Pakor Jones

Also the likes of Koke and Savic have to be careful and avoid getting yellows today

  • Jeronamo Pakor Jones

Really good goal by Felipe Luis

  • Vagabond Messi

Also we need to rest our modfield , our most important matches are close. Midfielders are only one who don’t get rotated.

  • Jeronamo Pakor Jones

It’s true but because of injuries now I can understand the lack of rotation. Still we should have had more rotation before the injuries

  • thericeking

    comment here for real discussion..

personally i see a saul wonder goal afoot. 1-1 draw

  • Jeronamo Pakor Jones

    Derby in a couple hours.

    Aupa Atleti!!!

  • Vagabond Messi

Time to bench Saul and no it’s not because of hatred or something , Saul on offense either back pass or pass straight to Madrid player, even foul them. On offense his stupidity cost a goal. He’s a liability week in week out.

  • Vagabond Messi

Fuck what a chance ,oh Torres.

  • Vagabond Messi

Another stupid foul near dangerous area, it’s kiss of death against Madrid.

  • Vagabond Messi

Good Saul needs rest for Leicster.

  • Vagabond Messi

Time wasting and play acting from cheaters .

  • Vagabond Messi

Thomas was needed in midfield More than Corriea, midfield looks broken.

  • Vagabond Messi

Corriea what a ball to Griezmann.
