Goals from Koke and Griezmann gave the red and whites the win in Gran Canaria a week ago, and Simeone has named a strong line-up as he looks to finish the job this evening.

  • Karlp

    GAITAN & CORREA…. GAITAN & CORREA…. GAITAN & CORREA….
    is this real life?

  • iamfaried

This lineup still won’t satisfy some people.

  • Karlp

including me. People have preference, nothing wrong with that.

  • Karlp

    vamos atleti

  • iamfaried

How more attacking can this lineup be? We don’t have Messi or Ronaldo on the bench.

  • Ahmad Hossainy

It satisfies me, I agree about every single choice of the XI.
Are you little happy now ?!

  • Jeronamo Pakor Jones

Thank you.. I think he just misses the point

  • Ahmad Hossainy

Don’t make other people’s comments and opinions your main concern here, they are all entitled to their opinions.
It’s really not cool what you and many other people have been doing here, there is something called “freedom of speech”, and it amazes me that there are American and British people here who are trying to deny us that.

  • Karlp

this las palmas team’s quality is far from their first team’s quality

  • iamfaried

Trust me I do, but you guys must understand Simeone. He wants to be an attractive 433 formation. Which is why he got Kranevitter and Augusto to play as the anchorman behind Koke and Gabi. Matias still needed experience to fulfill his role, whilst Augusto was injured. So he tried to make due with a Gabi Tiago Koke Middle but the defence was very exposed. Speaks volumes of the importance of the anchorman, or Busquets role.

Right now he’s trying to play an attacking 442 but it isn’t working out, therefore reverting to his familiar formation.

It’s the same conundrum faced by England coaches when trying to play Gerard and Lampard in the same formation, or Italian one with Del Piero and Totti. On paper it is such an amazing duo, but in reality it doesn’t work.

So yeah I do get it, but I actually understand Simeone’s tactics. (I think)

  • Jeronamo Pakor Jones

It feels good seeing Atleti attack

  • iamfaried

Not denying anyone anything. I’m just asking for people to be reasonable about it. And I’m helping them see the situation clearly as to have informed opinions.

  • Jeronamo Pakor Jones

This is what I meant by performance. We look totally different today

  • Jeronamo Pakor Jones

I think he actually just meant that even if someone doesn’t agree with this line up it’s just because each individual has different preferences.

For me I don’t really mind this line up today but what I was complaining about was playing players out of position, especially overcrowding our midfield with defensive type players

  • Ahmad Hossainy

Being annoying and unreasonable is also our right, and freedom of speech wouldn’t have been an issue if all opinions were reasonable. When some people say some bullshit but you still respect their right to express themselves, that is freedom of speech.

I also have the right to be an idiot and not understand the situation even after you tried so hard to “help me”.
    But thanks for you help.

  • Karlp

that Tana’s chance, who should be covering him? Vrsaljko? Juanfran?

  • iamfaried

Man what is it with the passive aggressive behavior? Just chill man. You are quite rude to be honest. You are exactly the opposite of what you preach. Quite oxymoronic.

شغل اخوان خربتو مصر جاين تخربو اتليتيكو

  • Jeronamo Pakor Jones

Not a bad half, once or twice we slipped up in defence but with basically controlling the game the defence hasn’t been under too much pressure.

  • Karlp

if I have to criticize 1 thing for this half, is I don’t see enough urgency, except for Lucas (and Vrsaljko probably). Is Vrsaljko defensive positioning a bit weak? And this is not only from this game.

  • Kris

I respect it Faried. If everyone on here stated the same things, it’d be quite boring. The last thread where so many people tried to shut out anyone with a different opinion was quite disgusting to see and be a part of. Keep your comments coming, I will read every single one.

  • Ahmad Hossainy

Have been called much worse, other people also insulted me in Arabic here, and many people have brought politics here during their arguments with me, they keep claiming that I belong to Muslim brotherhood, which I’m not, I’m not saying they are good or bad, but I have nothing to do with them, and what the fuck does Muslim Brotherhood have to do with Simeone’s 4 CMs?!
But none of you have succeeded to stop me, no one will.

I think the one who insults me in Arabic in an English website so nobody else can understand, and who upvote his own comments (don’t go now and undo it) is the passive aggressive one.
    I pity you.

  • Kris

I think Vrsaljko defensive positioning is very good. The plan probably is playing Juanfran alongside Vrsaljko to allow Vrsaljko to roam a bit further up, but Juanfran has been underwhelming at the back and in attack. Vrsaljko seems to win every header on his side. Does he have a really good leap or his man very short?

  • iamfaried

I appreciate your opinion. Everyone is entitled to one. Do you have any suggestions how I should run my life too? I mean you do have all the Stats on the ready.

    • Brushed his teeth 1 times today since his last brush last night.
    • Didn’t have enough vegetables for lunch since the last time he ate broccoli.

  • iamfaried

Thank you. But I just want them to understand we are not under valuing their opinions or preferences, as they should us. We are all discussing our views and we all must be given the respect they demand. They say we don’t allow freedom of speech, but the second any of the hardworking writers that are keeeping this amazing site alive writes something positive about Cholo they go and shit all over them.

Respect must be given in order to be received.

  • Jeronamo Pakor Jones

    Good goal. Griezmann

  • Kris

What a beautiful play and goal.

  • Jeronamo Pakor Jones

And that’s what we’re capable of

  • Kris

As someone who’s missed so many of those types of tap-ins, I really appreciate that goal. Such a hard tap-in. Perfect touch from Griezmann.

  • Karlp

    Griezmann, 3 games in a row 🙂

  • Jeronamo Pakor Jones

Yes it was. Great to see him an$ Gaitan linking like that as well. That goal just warmed my heart

  • Jeronamo Pakor Jones

Is Godin still feeling the effects from that injury a while ago? Well… 1-1

  • Kris

Wow. What a goal. Absolutely shit defending from Atletico. Whole defense sleeping.

  • Karlp

how the hell that las palmas goal happened so easily?

  • Jeronamo Pakor Jones

    Lovely by Correa

  • Kris

    What a fucking finish!! CORREA!!

  • Jeronamo Pakor Jones

This guy is definitely a talent

  • Ahmad Hossainy

Correa is what they call in Spain “un crack” .. what a finish that was.

  • Kris

    Good 65 minutes from Griezmann.

  • Karlp

I think he has a good leap. Yap, probably his positioning seems weak because he attacks more than Juanfran.

  • Karlp

Torres for Gimenez, what is this? Christmas?

  • Karlp

Correa 🙂 his kind of goal

  • Jeronamo Pakor Jones

What the hell…. Is this ref crazy?

  • iamfaried

I think what Atletis game been lacking is those passing triangles. Where either Juanfran and Filipe link up with Koke and Arda. That was beautiful.

  • Jeronamo Pakor Jones

    Agreed

  • Kris

Backheels galore. Holy shit. Beautiful to watch.

  • Jeronamo Pakor Jones

It’s been a while since I’ve had so many compliments for Atleti. I hope this continues

  • Jeronamo Pakor Jones

A great showing in your 78 minutes Correa, really appreciated it

  • Jeronamo Pakor Jones

Bare and Torres both seem to be trying to put on a good showing. Nice stuff

  • Jeronamo Pakor Jones

And again our defence caught napping

  • Kris

Juanfran absolutely raped on that goal. Holy shit.

  • Jeronamo Pakor Jones

    That was schoolboy stuff

  • iamfaried

This is exactly what Simeone was trying to avoid. Fielding the attacking players leaves him so vulnerable at the back.
It won’t matter if we score 3 if we will concede 3.

  • Jeronamo Pakor Jones

I don’t want to pick him put but honestly Juanfran has made some mistakes today I wouldn’t expect of him

  • iamfaried

Horrible. I’d rather wait for Augusto to comeback before we play so many offensive players.

  • Kris

This ref is absolutely trash lol

  • Kris

    What the fucking fuck?

  • Jeronamo Pakor Jones

I can’t fucking believe the manner in which we conceded those last two goals

  • Kris

My goodness me. No wonder Simeone insists on 4 CMs for defense. I didn’t know our defense was that bad.

  • nandes

    Our defense… jesus

  • Jeronamo Pakor Jones

We conceded those two goals late when it seemed like we switched off… Mistakes from over on the right side of our defence cost us there and honestly I don’t think we played badly at all but what the hell happened there?

  • iamfaried

Haha yeah. But they did have an off day, or at least Juanfran and Godin. I thought Josema was okay.

  • Karlp

Those 3 goals is very similar to 3 Madrid goals in 2014 CL final’s extra time. Our defense just let go.

  • iamfaried

Juanfran had a bad game. It was clear from the start. But he is not getting any younger, which explains why Simeone is fielding Vrsa now.
Sad to see but it’s reality. As was the case with Torres.

  • Kris

We didn’t play bad but not playing till the final whistle is blown is so unlike Atletico of Simeone. This match proves very clearly why Vrsaljko has been starting at RB over Juanfran.

  • Jeronamo Pakor Jones

I also voiced my concern about our defense in the Eibar game, the difference there was that they didn’t take their opportunities but lately our defense hasn’t been difficult to break down

  • iamfaried

Our defense was on the decline ever since Miranda left. Not only defensively but when was the last time a defense scored from a set piece?

  • Jeronamo Pakor Jones

But if that’s the case then leaving him on the bench every now and then would be better than forcing him into the side.

I still think we switched off but at times this season we have been making many defensive errors regardless of who’s on the pitch, when we control the game with our attacking players we look good but we need the defense to do their part.

  • Kris

I am a football team kind of guy, but very clearly Juanfran’s defensive mistakes led to the goals scored. The thing is the shape looked exactly like playing with 4 CMs when Griezmann and Correa were on. When they went off, pressing stopped. It proves also the importance of fast and active strikers on the pitch. Not sluggish Torres(nino fans, please don’t crucify me) and Keidi. I swear Keidi looked like he was walking when he was sprinting. He needs to get better if he is to have any kind of future at Atletico.

  • AnonX

Bad deal switching off before the match ends. That 2 goals came in so fast out of nowhere !!
    Let that be the last.

  • Jeronamo Pakor Jones

That set piece issue has been pointed out a few times and I agree. Even defending set pieces has become an option. I don’t think it was right after Miranda left that we had a defensive decline tho, I think that those forward runs Godin makes this season has something to do with it

  • Karlp

agree, not playing till the final whistle is blown is so unlike Atletico. Happens to other teams a lot, but almost never seen it in Atleti.

  • iamfaried

That is true, but I think the only reason he says playing on the wings, other than the injuries, is because Cholo wants him to show Vrsa the ropes.

But yeah if we have offensive players that can hold up the ball as good as Arda we would’ve been so much better.

  • Paweł Kosiński

Gimenez’s header against Al-Ittihad on December 30th. In official competition though is was Godin’s opener vs. Osasuna on November 27th.

  • Karlp

yap, those godin run has caused some goals if I’m not wrong.

  • iamfaried

True I guess. But that’s the point of having a defensive midfield. Tiago always covered behind Godin. Until the Villarreal game where Tiago failed.

  • Kris

Gaitan needs the trust and the minutes to play that kind of role. I think he proved today that Cholo’s gotta give him those things. Although, I don’t think he’s fit enough for all 90 minutes at the moment.

  • iamfaried

Yeah that was always the Atleti highpressing style. The strikers always pressed from the opponents box.

As a diehard Torres fan, I do think he should given his all. But it’s so hard watching him leave.

  • Jeronamo Pakor Jones

But midfielers (even defensive ones) can’t do anything about the type of goals we conceded there late on

  • Karlp

hope this Juanfran thing is just a phase, and not a real age thing. Because earlier this season he looks really good and dynamic.

  • iamfaried

True in many cases but not Atleti. Our midfielders would hassle any player before executing any long ball. This we wouldn’t be in a position like today’s. and they also covered behind Juanfran Filipe and Godin when they advanced forward. This is what made Atleti a defensive unit.

  • iamfaried

Yeah, but it’s been even more visible with Filipe. He just hasn’t been the Same since returning from Chelsea. I hope they find their feet once more.

  • Karlp

I think the 2nd half of last season is one of Filipe’s best ever. But after the injury this season, he hasn’t fully back yet.

  • Vagabond Messi

Bale goal was due to sheer genius play of Di Maria , rest were due to exhaustion.

  • Vagabond Messi

His first touch alone put in him top tier talnet wise

  • Karlp

Ah yes, pardon me. On the 1st goal we were still compact and hoping to take things into PK. But, after that 1st goal it’s just exhaustion.

  • Vagabond Messi

It’s okay , one thing that always baffles me is why we don’t try to play from back in injury time and spend few seconds instead of Keeper hoofing ball up , that equaliser hurts a lot , but what hurts most if Simeone taking off Raul Garcia after 65 or something minute , he was constantly proving threat and bullying RM players. After he went we went all defensive with no threat upfront.
