Godín out for three weeks

An MRI scan confirmed that he suffered a knee sprain in Sunday's win

MARCA reports that Diego Godín underwent an MRI on Monday morning which confirmed the defender has a left knee sprain and that he will be out of action for three weeks.

The injury, suffered late in Sunday’s hard-fought victory against Real Zaragoza, sidelined the Uruguayan for about two minutes, before he courageously forced his way back onto the pitch to help nine-man Atleti defend its fragile 0-1 lead.

Los Rojiblancos had been reduced to nine after Reyes was controversially sent-off, and Godín had been stretchered off the field after sliding awkwardly to block a Maño shot.

Manager Quique Sánchez Flores had used up all of his allotted substitutions and could not bring on a replacement for the banged up centre-back, who limped back onto the pitch to help his team-mates claim the clean sheet.

Godín, who has played every single minute of our 2010-11 campaign to date, has been ruled out for our Europa League tie with Bayer Leverkusen on Thursday and our next Liga match versus Sevilla on Sunday.

Diego will also miss out on Uruguay’s international friendlies against Indonesia on the 8th of October and versus China on the 12th, but should be fit in time for when we host Getafe on the weekend of the 17th.

Well, back to the defense of last year…Perea in the centre and Valera on the right. I would prefer A.Lo on the right I think…

  • Ringo Schut

Yeah, López on the right could work. Just like two years ago, right?
You could also try Pulido or a defensive midfielder as RB.

Assunção, Perea, Domínguez, Filipe; Camacho, Tiago.

Or Camacho as RB, I think his cross is better than Paulo’s is…

  • Camacho as side back? No way.

But A.Lo on the right could work, but I guess it could irritate Valera so maybe QSF will let him play instead.

This is a horrible new. We need him so much. He is our Kaiser with only seven matches. Surely we will play with the same defense than in the Europa league final. Too soon for Pulido, i think. What´s wrong with Ujfa on right? He can play the next game; Didn´t he pay the bill yet?

  • That kind of game shouldn’t have cost us Godin and Reyes, as they fell to stress and frayed nerves.
At least it could be worse. Reyes got 1-match ban only, and Godin will have international break to recuperate.
