Atlético Madrid will be looking to book their place in the Champions League round of 16 this evening, and will do so should they win against FC Rostov in the Vicente Calderón.

Fernando Torres and Antoine Griezmann lead the line for the rojiblancos, with Kevin Gameiro only fit enough for the bench having not trained yesterday. Sime Vrsaljko makes a rare appearance at right-back.

well done ruining my fantasy defensive points

  • leika

We should probably play Gimenez in one or two games just to get some fresh energy into the backline. Both Godin and Savic have been sloppy lately. Especially Savic. Maybe they’re a bit overplayed and tired.

  • AndersAT

I don’t like the defensive glitches these last two matches. A bit worried. I still think we will win this match though, we are just buzzing around their goal. Vrsaljko has been good i think.

  • Karlp

    what a pass Vrsaljko

  • Kris

Vrsaljko can certainly cross the ball eh? Holy shit. Beautiful crosses so far. All very dangerous.

  • Karlp

I think that’s always his strong point.

  • Karlp

Kinda unbalance on the right side because there is no RW tandem for Vrsaljko

  • Kris

Yup. Very unbalanced. Saul or Koke are supposed to be playing in the right midfield position and they’re both playing very centrally at the moment. Maybe we can bring in Correa in the 2nd half and Gameiro for Saul and Torres, we might be able to find some width and more dynamism. Pretty good game so far to be honest, just that Filipe hasn’t been that much influential and Koke sleeping in midfield with the ball leading up to the goal conceded. Vrsaljko is good.

  • Chewie

The goal came from Filipe making a bad decision – I believe Carrasco was making a decent run and was asking for the ball in what could’ve been a quick attack. Filipe, though, decided to make a horizontal pass, made a mistake, lost the ball, didn’t cover his zone, and with Godin not yet back in his position, the left flank was completely open.

    Vrsaljko is impressive. Excellent crosses.

The game’s not bad at all. Good to see Rostov giving us a run on our money. However, conceding in third game in a row is not something I’m used to seeing.

  • Karlp

    this 4-3-3 didn’t work yet

  • Karlp

why do we keep giving this high ball? I think we’ve seen for the past few weeks that most of our goal didn’t come from header

  • Karlp

I take it back, I take it back !!!!!

  • Chewie

Sneaky little Frenchman steals the point from Rostov. Incredible luck (and technique) in both goals.

  • Jeronamo Pakor Jones

Once again I’ll say it, Torres held us back today and Gabi wasn’t good either but we deserved the win

  • Karlp

Saul-Koke-Gabi probably should be rotated for 2 CMs position, just like we rotate 6 of our striker/winger for 4 attacking position, and 4 of our CBs for 2 CB position.

  • AsianJudy

That last goal made me jump up and my stomach sank with rostov’s last attempt at the very end then i got back up again when the shot was miles away..!

    Great and well deserved win!

  • Kris

Goddamn. I was a bit uncertain about Thomson as the referee for this game in the pre-match thread, but that was an absolutely amazing call on Griezmann’s game-winning goal. Wow. I disagree with the guys on AtleticoFans twitter that we didn’t play well and our attack wasn’t that good. The fucking Rostov guys played their hearts out and stuck a foot in every single one of our attempts. We dominated this game and played very well. Torres I believe was solely kept in the match for the reason of his physicality and being able to bring the ball down from the air, which he did very well. Pretty proud of the boys for persistence until the very end. Great work. Aupa Atleti!

  • Joa

Oh my god, Griezmann’s reaction when he thought he was offside, and then smiling that it counted. Aupa Atleti.. man hope we keep this against PSV, and then try to win or draw against Bayern
