Come Tuesday, Atlético Madrid will embark on their journey to yet another Champions League final as they travel to PSV Stadion, where hosts PSV will be looking for revenge after they were defeated in the Round of 16 last year.

Both clubs couldn’t muster up a single goal across both legs and the Dutch side was defeated 8-7 on penalties. However, Diego Simeone has insisted that this year’s Group D match will be different given that they are meeting in the early stages of the competition, per AS:

“That time it was the last 16, a knockout game, now there are points at play and that changes things. This is a nice stadium to play in, a fantastic atmosphere, a good place to begin,” Simeone said at the pre-game presser.

While this year’s European battle still favors the Spanish visitors, it is PSV Eindhoven who is in better domestic form. The 15/16 Eredivisie champions are unbeaten in their last six competitive games and have scored 12 goals in the process.

PSV defender Jetro Willems has come out and cemented his team’s motivation to come out on top on Tuesday, per De Telegraaf. “I expect revenge and that feeling prevails also in the group,” Willems said on Monday.

Atlético, on the other hand, has endured a more complicated start to their Primera campaign by earning their first victory last Saturday over Celta Vigo.

The win has calmed the nerves of the fans and of the players after they played out two consecutive draws against newly promoted sides Alavés and Leganés to start the season. Simeone will look to their satisfying 4-0 win over Celta to give his side the confidence they need.

“A win was needed to get off the ground and build confidence. When we scored the other day we relaxed, and then we played very well. All teams need to win to have confidence. In the second half in Vigo the team freed itself.”

In addition to Simeone’s words of confidence, midfielder Koke spoke of his willingness to help his team any way he can:

Atleti will be looking for just their second ever win on Dutch soil, the last coming against this week’s opponents in Eindhoven eight years ago. Sergio Agüero scored a double that night in a 3-0 triumph.

Simeone has a full squad at his disposal, with reports stating that Gameiro will start up front alongside Griezmann and that Giménez will play his first match of the season in place of Stefan Savic.

Sime Vrsaljko and Thomas Partey have been left in Madrid for technical reasons, whereas Alessio Cerci and goalkeeper Miguel Ángel Moyá remain on the injury list.

Atletico has their confidence back. And that tie to Alavés is not looking to negative now that Barca lost to them this past weekend. Giménez should be hungry to prove himself worthy as a starter. If we keep a clean sheet and some he should score, Giménez maybe back as a starter. Gameiro has been hustling but unlucky so far this year, but I almost would rather see Correa starting today along side Griezmann. !!AUPA Atleti!!

We did have some of our confidence back, but the two draws against Alaves & Leganes were negative and shouldn’t have happened, and they were mostly because of our own big mistakes, and Alaves win against Barca shouldn’t make our draw against them any less negative or regrettable .
I’ve always been against that kind of logic, comparing the bad to the worse, bad should be compared to good, if you were looking for success .
The same logic made some other people say after our 2 draws that we are better than Valencia !
Barca can and probably will thrash Alaves in the second game, could score 7 or 8 goals, but we won’t see anyone demanding Atleti to do the same !!
