Matchday LIVE: Levante vs. Atlético

Atleti hoping for a slip up in Catalonia as they travel to Valencia

Rayo Vallecano de Madrid v Club Atletico de Madrid - Copa del Rey

Still in with a chance of winning La Liga, Atlético need all three points away to already-relegated Levante, who have been Atleti’s bogey-team in recent years.

Godín and Griezmann both are missing from the Atlético XI, as they are both on bookings and at risk of missing the final game of the season against Celta.

You can prepare for the match by reading our Match Preview.

Starting XIs

Levante: Mariño, Navarro, Verza, Lerma, Cuero, Morales, Juanfran, Medjani, Casadesús, Pedro López, Verdú

Atlético: Oblak; Juanfran, Giménez, Savic, Filipe; Gabi, Augusto, Koke, Saúl; Correa, Torres

  • Nick Lawley

Torres is just magnificent to watch like this.

  • Koke

Well, a typical first half by Torres so far. Does something brilliant, scores a beautiful goal, makes some breathtaking dribbles, then spurns a couple half chances and loses possession unnecessarily. I’m hoping he can score again!

I understand the obvious need for rotation after how hard the players have been working, but like you guys said, all three games left (one in the CL and two in La Liga) are finals. Griezmann should come on. Maybe Partey comes on a little later if we’re in need of further heroics. And please by all means keep Correa on. This kid seems like he’s at the center of every dangerous attack we deliver. He’s special.

    Stakes have never been higher…

  • Mitch

    Don’t worry, gonna be OK!

  • madwriter

How many times have we seen this type of play? For God’s sake…

  • Chewie

Worst game of the season at the worst time possible. And history repeats itself. Incredible.

  • Kris

Aww man. Really waThat’s fine toI

  • Mitch

    I’m gonna kick myself now…speech less….

  • Kris

Aww man. Really wanted to finish above Real. That’s fine tho.

  • Alfred Rodriguez

The substitution I thought was very questionable at the moment and now, was when Correa was taken off. He was by far our best player in the first half. You could tell Torres was out of gas in the second half. We needed the creative player to break through rather than sending continuous balls over the top.

  • Koke

Heartbreaking. Just like that, our La Liga season is over

  • nandes

Barcelona players can get 100 penalties for tripping themselves in the box but we can’t get one for a clear handball. It’s incredible.

Hope we never have to play in this cursed stadium again.

  • Koke

Correa should not have been taken off. If anyone should’ve been subbed it should’ve been Torres. Correa was our best attacking player in the first half

  • Koke

Thank God they’re getting relegated. I can’t take another game at this stadium, it’s bad for my heart…

  • David in SF

Blessing in disguise I suppose. Now we just focus on the cup we’ve never ever ever won. sad, but encoueaged that this happened for a reason so we have 3 weeks to prepare while Madrid have to see out the season.

  • AaX

On the contrary I think this is for the better. Let our weaknesses be identified now and we can solely concentrate All MAX Effort for the Final in Milan.

    Aupa ATLETI !!

  • Kris

Yes and Getafe. That pathetic excuse of a club.

  • Koke

Yes, Madrid will have to play their hearts out next weekend (probably in vain), meanwhile we can regroup, cut our losses early, and get mentally prepared for the final and get used to the idea that we won’t be winning La Liga this season. Hopefully if Barca win next weekend Madrid will be crushed psychologically after having been so hopeful, and also tired. I guess this is the first game all season where we don’t have to take it partido a partido. Tunnel vision until the final is over.

  • We won’t be able to complain about being tired now.

  • Koke

Good riddance, I hate Getafe too. They should just call themselves Real Madrid B. And I’d much rather see Sporting get relegated than Rayo, who play their hearts out against Madrid and Barca every single year

  • atleti lover

What the fuck is this!!!! What are the players doing in the second half carrasco is shit.
We left real madrid pass us and lost a shitty game against the last team in la liga.
We will lose the champions league 4 or 5-0 against the fucken madrid and next week real will win la liga….

  • Mitch

    I like your attitude!

  • Kris

    Lol u again.

  • Mitch

What is this “cursed stadium” about ?

  • UK_Atletico

    Torres was great!

  • Kris

Plus the Vallecas stadium is actually always rocking. And they always play beautiful football instead of bending over. Although their defense usually does that for them.
I hope this is the beginning of the demise of Getafe. I’m just gonna read the news at the end of every season until Getafe goes into extinction. Seriously, fuck them man.

  • madwriter

But for how long are we going to let them slide with this? How many times in the last 5, 6 years have they lost all the key matches. How many more games till they learn to take every game seriously. For a guy like Simeone who said that Atleti will take it one game at a time and won’t lose focus, we have lost just that, on the most important game of the season.

  • David in SF

My thoughts exactly. The lads looked like they had nothing left in the tank. 3 Weeks to rest and prepare for the final. Play our youngsters next week (including Tiago) and we will be 100% mentally, emotionally and physically prepared for Madrid in Milan. Forza Atleti

  • Kris

    No but he was tired.

  • Kris

Agree that this always fucking happens like the season we actually won the damn title. But we gotta look ahead now.

  • nandes

Well we reached our season’s objective. 3rd place like Cholo said. Considering all the problems we’ve had this season it’s amazing we ever got this far.

  • David in SF

I don’t like making excuses- nonetheless, with the physical demands of how we play under Simeone- these slip ups are only normal. We’ve gone through an emotional last 5 weeks or so with having needing to take out Barcelona, and Bayern in champions league- coupled with grinding out 1-0 victories against the likes of Athletic, Malaga and Rayo. It was only going to be a matter of time. We now have 3 weeks to mentally, and emotionally prepare and physically repair for the cup that have eluded us in our proud history. I would’ve loved to have Atleti win the league, but I will take the Champions League over 2 liga titles. (That’s just my opinion)…

  • Kris

#Atleti’s results away at Levante since they were promoted in 2010:

    L2-0

    D1-1

  • Koke

He was very involved and his goal was incredible, but I think towards the end his performance was dwindling. And he lost possession that led to the goal we conceded (not that it’s totally his fault.) Not taking anything away from him, more just praising Correa!

  • madwriter

Yeah I know, I’m just frustrated. I just want Atletico to parade the UCL trophy in Madrid in front of Real fans.

  • Shlomo

If Oblak keeps a clean sheet next week, he will equal Francisco Liano’s record of only conceding 18 goals in a season.
The loss is not that disappointing, we would not have won the title anyway. But it is disappointing that we have lost to a team that has already been relegated, and that we have not won Levante away 6 times in a row.

  • Ahmad Hossainy

Thomas was clearly aiming at the hand of the defender, it clearly was not a penalty, we can’t put the blame on the ref, we just lacked creativity, like in every single game where the opponent sits at the back and give us the ball .

  • Ahmad Hossainy

And why not keeping both of Correa & Torres and taking Saul off ?!
