Tottenham Hotspur have this morning confirmed that Toby Alderweireld has signed a five-year contract with the club to complete his move from Atlético Madrid.

Southampton, despite having the player on loan last season, weren’t able to convince the Belgian to join them permanently.

Toby becomes the fourth player to leave Atlético this summer after Mandzukic, Miranda and the Turkish guy all left the Vicente Calderón.

Alderweireld joined from Ajax two years ago, and the move represents a huge profit for Atlético on a player that struggled to break into the first-team ahead of Miranda and Diego Godín.

It is reported that the deal is worth €16 million, plus an extra €2 million in potential add-ons.

This is unlikely to be the last we hear of the Alderweireld transfer, with Southampton still threatening legal action over the buy-out clause in Toby’s loan agreement.

It seems that Tottenham however, have had the last laugh.

“I’m very excited to join Tottenham,” Toby tweeted after the news was confirmed. “I’m looking forward to this but also back at a great season with Southampton. A great club and great fans – thank you!”

“It’s always been a dream to play at a club like Spurs. Now that dream is coming so I’m very happy, very proud and I will give my best,” he told Spurs’ official website.

It could be a case of one Belgian out, another one in. Ferreira Carrasco has been heavily linked and a deal could be wrapped up soon, according to reports.

Farewell Toby!

  • Ringo can’t get under it

If both Miranda and Alderweireld get a replacement and if Ferreira will be coming for Arda’s spot, Óliver joining the team (to replace CAM Koke) and if Mario and Gabi or Tiago get replaced by Koke and a bought C(D)M, and lastly, and Mandzukic being replaced by two great (potentially) strikers, we’ll have a squad with a broader range than before. Especially if Correa stays as well. I hope we’ll be able to use that to our advantage, big time.

I know Jiménez is probably departing, on at least a loan, but our squad still seems to be improving. If we can get Óliver, Correa and Ferreira to work just as hard as Arda, I think we’ll actually improve in that position, since I consider Óliver to be more effective than Arda and pretty much as skilled at dribbling, which was his main asset.

No one here will miss Toby, I think. Maybe some will think he was a nice guy, but outside of a good pass as a defender he didn’t add much to the Atleti game. He wasn’t that bad (outside of the CL final, but that was a difficult role to fulfill), but that’s it, and it’s not enough for us. Giménez is better and we might as well get another back-up defender. Which will have to be a good one, because I’m pretty sure both Giménez and Godín will get more than 4 amarillos next year.

Good luck at Spurs, Toby, thank you for your services before.

  • Mojo

Bingo!!!! We brought him by 5M Euro, a money we got after selling Demichiles to man City after we signed him for free a week ago. Alderweireld never convinced me. Good luck to him.

PS: what’s with the sentence in the article “and the Turkish guy”?? Just say Arda!

  • He’s dead to me.
    (I’m joking)
