Tottenham Hotspur have this morning confirmed that Toby Alderweireld has signed a five-year contract with the club to complete his move from Atlético Madrid.
Southampton, despite having the player on loan last season, weren’t able to convince the Belgian to join them permanently.
Toby becomes the fourth player to leave Atlético this summer after Mandzukic, Miranda and the Turkish guy all left the Vicente Calderón.
Alderweireld joined from Ajax two years ago, and the move represents a huge profit for Atlético on a player that struggled to break into the first-team ahead of Miranda and Diego Godín.
It is reported that the deal is worth €16 million, plus an extra €2 million in potential add-ons.
This is unlikely to be the last we hear of the Alderweireld transfer, with Southampton still threatening legal action over the buy-out clause in Toby’s loan agreement.
It seems that Tottenham however, have had the last laugh.
“I’m very excited to join Tottenham,” Toby tweeted after the news was confirmed. “I’m looking forward to this but also back at a great season with Southampton. A great club and great fans – thank you!”
“It’s always been a dream to play at a club like Spurs. Now that dream is coming so I’m very happy, very proud and I will give my best,” he told Spurs’ official website.
It could be a case of one Belgian out, another one in. Ferreira Carrasco has been heavily linked and a deal could be wrapped up soon, according to reports.
