Arda Turan breaks silence over Barcelona move

Our former Turkish wizard speaks of his 'dream' to play for our rivals

"Messi is the best in the world" - Arda Turan

It’s been just over 24 hours now since Arda Turan’s move to Barcelona was confirmed, and a million rojiblanco hearts were broken in the process.

Many are calling him a traitor, whilst some declare that the buyback clause inserted into his contract is meaningless, as Atleti wouldn’t take him back anyway.

In the weeks and even years that have passed, we were led to believe that Arda Turan’s future lie in England. The young Turk had ‘dreamed’ to play in the Premier League, and his agent had been speculating on a move to Chelsea or Liverpool in the UK for quite some time.

After four years of dedicated service and five major titles, including the La Liga crown, Copa del Rey and UEFA Europa League, Arda was granted safe passage to the Premier League by almost every Atlético fan.

And then, the worst happened.

“It’s an incredible feeling,” Arda said to Mundo Deportivo, a day after the move was confirmed. “I have always dreamed of playing for Barcelona.”

That smoke you can see over at the Vicente Calderón? That’s our lot burning Arda jerseys outside the official store.

Brace yourselves for a feeling of intense nausea.

“Every footballer wants to play at the Camp Nou, the best stadium I’ve ever been at.”

“Ever since Barcelona expressed their interest, I haven’t been able to sleep,” he gushed. “That was until yesterday, when the transfer was officially finalised.”

“I was on holiday but I was constantly calling my agent and asking if the deal had been done yet. I couldn’t get Barca out of my head.”

When asked what he thought about the buyback clause in his contract, Arda shrugged it off.

“All I’m thinking about is that Barcelona are my dream. If they want me and I want them, there’s nothing to talk about.”

So that’s the end of that then.

Arda Turan did make a post on Instragram yesterday, thanking Atlético fans for their support.

“What amazing four years l have had, we were always like neighborhood children trying to win matches, playing with our hearts innocently, l will miss each and every moment.

Everytime l think about those moments l get emotional, l am grateful and thankful from the bottom of my heart to our club president, CEO, everyone who worked at the Club and the facilities to our equipment guys, medical staff, technical staff and everyone else for teaching me confidence and trust.

l will cherish all the beautiful moments with our magnificent fans, because you managed to turn even the most difficult moments into something special for me. I love you all, thank you for everything.”

A nice gesture, but some people won’t be able to get past today’s quotes.

If it’s his dream to play there, I guess it’s good he followed it… but that doesn’t mean there are no hurt feelings.
