Player ratings: Atleti surrender crown at home

See how we rated the players in disappointing 1-0 defeat to Barcelona

Barcelona win La Liga a year after Atleti's triumph in the Camp Nou

Barcelona win La Liga a year after Atleti's triumph in the Camp Nou

On the anniversary of their title win at the Camp Nou last year, Atleti conceded their status as La Liga champions to Barcelona who ran out 1-0 winners in the Spanish capital.

Lionel Messi scored the only goal of the game in the second half, meaning that the red and whites will need to go to Granada on the final day and avoid defeat in order to clinch a top 3 finish.

Read on to see our thoughts on the players’ performances:

Jan Oblak – 7

Made a number of good saves, most notably from Dani Alves and Messi. Were a few occasions where he didn’t appear to communicate with his defenders, but another impressive match still.

Juanfran – 6

One of those who has just seen fatigue catch up with him as the season has gone on. Still gives everything, but hasn’t been as effective as usual in recent matches. Summer rest will do him good.

Diego Godín – 7

Showed again that he is the leader of the defence, and stood up for the colours on his shirt at the end. Would’ve been lost without him at the back this season, he had a near faultless match and was unlucky for the goal.

José Giménez – 6

Another good game against top opposition, and although he showed his naivety on a couple of occasions, he is gaining experience and improving all the time. Very nearly scored early on but for a Bravo wonder save. Must be time to look at his contract soon?

Guilherme Siqueira – 7

Ending the season very strongly, and in the second half in particular put in a very good performance. Despite the extreme heat, he was up and down the wing all match, but didn’t always have luck on his side. Filipe didn’t have the best year, could Siqueira hold down the left-back position next year?

Gabi – 6

Battled well, but was always likely to be playing a losing battle against the calibre of players in the Barcelona midfield. Last year he had the beating of them, but has been helpless at times this season. Especially when Tiago isn’t playing.

Mario Suárez – 5

Complained earlier in the week that Simeone prefers other players to him, but did nothing to prove a point today and was hauled off fairly early on. Possibly his last match in the Calderón?

Koke – 6

Some have been critical of Koke lately, saying that he has faded towards the end of the season. Perhaps so, but he has not had a rest in his professional career and is not the only one. Put in some good set-pieces today, but was in and out of the game.

Arda Turan – 6

As has been the theme in recent matches, he had his moments but never really threatened to take control of proceedings. Again, he has a much deserved rest coming up, but hasn’t been matching the level we’ve come to expect in the last month or so.

Antoine Griezmann – 6

Plenty of endeavour, but couldn’t really put a stamp on the mark despite a bright start. On the whole, he has probably been Atleti’s best performer this season, but needs to start showing his quality more often on the bigger stages.

Fernando Torres – 7

Quiet in the first half, but looked good in the second and did what Simeone asked him to do, cause problems with his running and stretch the opposition defences. Looking fitter and sharper every week.

Raúl García – 6

Came on just after the goal, but was never really allowed to make the type of impact that was desired. One good knockdown to Koke, but Atleti didn’t really play with the intensity that suits his style of play.

Mario Mandzukic – 5

Not really enough time to make an impact, but didn’t look as if he was out to prove a point or play for his place next season. Will be very interesting to see what happens to him in the summer, Monaco are supposedly interested.

Saúl – N/A

Do you agree with our ratings? Who was your Man of the Match?

  • AaX

Well Not Exactly under the same circurmstances, At Camp Nou THEY were playing for the Liga Title Equally against US, while at The Calderon, WE had conceded It about almost 8 Months Ago. What WE ACHIEVED IS UN-REPLICATABLE Not Even By Them (Madrid, Barca & Money Teams) Simply Because WE ARE ATLETICO DE MADRID !!!

Are those rumours about de Gea true? I thought he is one ’em rojiblancos ):

  • Chewie

I don’t remember him expressing his love for Atletico recently. If he wanted to stay, he had every chance to do so, and if he wants to join Real, I don’t care. Plus, I’d be only glad to see Jorge Mendes fucking about with Real’s business 🙂
