Matchday LIVE: Atlético vs. Real Madrid

Red and whites host local rivals in Champions League quarter-final first leg

The Vicente Calderón is expectant

Atlético play arguably their most important game of the season so far on Tuesday night, but will have to overcome holders Real Madrid in a repeat of last year’s final if they want to go one step further this year.

The red and whites squeezed past Bayer Leverkusen on the penalties in the last round, but have picked up form in recent weeks and are also boosted by striker Mario Mandzukic’s return to fitness.

Both teams are all full strength for what should be a thriller in the Vicente Calderón.

Starting XIs

Atlético: Oblak; Juanfran, Godín, Miranda, Siqueira; Gabi, Mario Suárez, Koke, Arda; Griezmann, Mandžukić

Real Madrid: Casillas; Carvajal, Ramos, Varane, Marcelo;,Kroos, Modric, James; Bale, Ronaldo, Benzema.

  • Oblak has been sensational – I don’t even know how we’re still in this

  • Chewie

Adios, Moya, Oblak is heavenly. 6 saves, some of them top-notch. Poor football so far, Real could’ve scored were they more lucky. We, on the other hand, could not. The full backs look bad, Mandzukic is a wrong choice for such a fast-paced game. Would like to see Saul and Jimenez/Torres in the second half, maybe around 60 minutes.

  • Jeronamo Pakor Jones

My thoughts so far exactly but the ref is also helping to make it hard for us with some questionable calls

  • Jeronamo Pakor Jones

    All true

  • Ahmad Hossainy

Jimenez is not on the bench .. I wish we don’t regret that

  • Max Huber

Atletico plays really, really poor, instead of Oblak of course – he´s just magnificient! But the rest – specially Suarez and Gabi – a nightmare, there is no pressure, they loose every ball and play just defensively and statically. So I hope for a wonder in the second half!

  • Chewie

    Oh, another Raul then.

  • Chewie

Did Carvajal just hit Mandzukic in the ribs? What the hell!

  • Chewie

What a match! Second half was Atletico all the way but the result is fair. The good thing is that Marcelo misses next match along with Suarez who was in his crappy mode today. Torres has to play from the start, he looks really good. Fascinating football.

  • Max Huber

Second half was much better – or I would say, the last 20 minutes. Raul Garcia and Torres changed the game – they should have substituded much earlier. I also wanted to see Saul! But all in all it´s an optimistic result for the next leg! We should score an early goal, then it´s going to be difficult for Real to score 2 against us – maybe it´s again time for Fernando to shine! A goal in the first minute……?

    Notes for a few players
Oblak – What an outstanding perfomance by him tonight, looks like we wont miss courtois anymore.

Miranda – Looked a bit shaky from time to time and I still think he shouldn’t play for us after this season.

Gabi – He has been commiting quite lot of fauls lately and even though I like his character and work-ethic, his perfomance has been declining and we should look for a replacement for the captain.

Mario Suarez – The man we’ve all criticised for being a big match player, showed both positive and negative things during the match but shows that he can’t replace thiago.

In general we looked too nervous from the start and real could have put enormous pressure on us if bale had been a bit more cynical. I think we all can agree on that we were lucky not to have been losing at half time. In second half we were much more confident, to be precise the last 20 minutes. Despite of an overall bad perfomance, we created enough chances during the last minutes to be standing with an advantage for the second leg but not conceding a goal was also one of our objectives.
