Match preview: Córdoba vs. Atlético

The return to league action after a long international break

Southern Spain is the destination for Atlético this evening as they take on Córdoba in the long-awaited return after the international break.

Kick-off is set for 18:00 CEST.

Diego Simeone’s men still sit in fourth place, a point behind Valencia, but in the first game since Cholo put pen-to-paper on a five-year contract extension, the Argentine has stressed the importance of today’s match.

“There are ten matches left for us in the league. Ten finals,” Cholo told the media at his pre-match press conference.

“Tomorrow is one of these finals and we need to play like it. Words matter very little at this stage of the season.”

Córdoba are rock bottom of La Liga, and are almost certain to be relegated. They have lost nine games in the league in a row, and lost the first fixture at the Vicente Calderón 4-2.

However the team displayed a lot of fight in their last game against Real Madrid.

“They played extremely well, despite only having ten men,” Simeone said. “That situation showed how competitive they are – the fought until the end.”

After starting last week in the victory over Getafe, Raúl Jiménez will have to watch from the sidelines again as he picked up an ankle sprain whilst on international duty in the game between Mexico and Paraguay.

During his press conference, Cholo unexpectedly confirmed the starting line-up for the match. “We will play with Oblak, Juanfran, Giménez, Godin, Gámez, Gabi, Tiago, Koke, Saul, Griezmann and Mandzukic.”

Miranda is suspended, which will mean we see our Uruguayan pairing of Giménez and Godín continue at the back for Atleti.

Jan Oblak is to continue in goal as Moyá is still recovering from his injury sustained against Bayer Leverkusen last month.

The biggest news for Atleti is the return of Saúl, who picked up a horrible injury in the first leg of our Champions League tie with Leverkusen back in February. Arda Turan drops to the bench.

Fernando Torres must settle for a place on the bench as Simeone decided to go again with Mario Mandzukic and Antoine Griezmann, who have 26 goals between them in the league this season.

Today’s match presents a real opportunity to take back third place, as Valencia must play Villarreal tomorrow in what will be a tough match for Los Che.

Atlético Madrid’s squad list:
Goalkeepers: Oblak, Bernabé.
Defenders: Juanfran, Gámez, Giménez, Godín, Lucas, Siqueira.
Midfielders: Mario Suárez, Tiago, Gabi, Koke, Saúl, Cani, Arda Turan.
Forwards: Fernando Torres, Mandzukic, Griezmann.

  • Chewie

The line-up seems competitive enough. Gamez instead of Siqueira again means that poor old Juanfran will have to do all the attacking once again.
Speaking of Villarreal – wouldn’t it be nice to grab the Vietto-Cheryshev pair from them? The former with 20 goals and 8 assists, the latter with 7 goals and 11 assists, and an average age of 23 years. And not so expensive, I would guess.

  • You have to say Cheryshev since he is your compatriot, but I only want Vietto
Cheryshev is fine, but I think we can sign much better player in his position, and we already have someone better, Correa
Besides, he belongs to Real Madrid, and they wouldn’t even sell him to Villarreal rather than us, the “big two” usually don’t sell their good players inside Spain

  • From today, April 4th until May 2nd, we gonna play 9 games in 29 days, a game almost every 3 days, and if we passed Real Madrid, it will be longer than 29 days
Valencia don’t play in Europe, so obviously they have an advantage, another advantage above the one point and the head-to-head they have above us
ROTATION is ‎inevitable, let’s see how will Simeone do it, or even IF he will do it, because Juanfran -for example- doesn’t seem that he will have any rest, since his backup has also become a regular starter, but on the other side !

If we didn’t get the 3rd place back in the next 2 weeks, I honestly don’t think that we will get it until the end of the season,
more than that, if we didn’t make a big gab between us and Sevilla in the next 2 weeks, the 4th place will be also in jeopardy, because the 4 games in this 2 weeks are the toughest for both of them, since they have a similar schedule (Valencia takes from Sevilla) both will play against Villarreal (Sevilla already did, and won) then Athletic (Sevilla are leading 2-0 at the moment) then Levante (derby game for Valencia) then Barcelona
    The margin error is ZERO

Manzano had an away goal drought in La Liga for 399 minutes, Simeone now has 335 minutes, and if we didn’t score today before min. 64 he will break that negative record
This is how bad we are right now, and that’s why I’m still worried about NOT qualifying to the Champions League next season, either directly or through play-offs

But who said that finishing on the top 4 is the only way to qualify to the CL, there is another way, wining the CL title !
