Matchday LIVE: Atlético vs. Bayer Leverkusen

Battle to reach the quarter-finals concludes tonight in Madrid

Mario scores the opener!

Mario scores the opener!

We’ve faced some stern tests in the league over the last few weeks, but the pressure on us then is nothing compared to that of tonight’s game.

A goal down from the first leg, Atlético know that they need to stop Leverkusen scoring, or end up having to score three.

Use the comments to post your thoughts, reactions and (hopefully) celebrations. We’ll be posting updates via Twitter, and you can follow the action right here.

Koke is captain. What an awesome sight.

  • Moya out – Oblak in!

  • Kris

Good job, Mario. We needed that. Five more please!!

  • Adnan Khan

    Mario suarez!!

  • Dircil

So, Moya is our bad luck then hahaha!!!! No Moya no worry !!!

  • Kris

You know what? I applaud that Gimenez yellow. That was a smart foul. Well needed. Good job.

  • Jeronamo Pakor Jones

I’m glad Mario Suarez has picked today to prove me wrong

  • Kris

Why is it that we always get unlucky in these big games? Remember last year…

  • Kris

    I meant with injuries.

  • Abdil Egriøz

I have lost half my voice, dying any minute now if leverkusen manages to score and it’s only half time. These matches are so freaking nerve-racking it’s crazy. It’s bizarre it took the goal to change our gameplay but we have begun to play better and with more consistenty we can squeze the second goal in.

  • Parsa1903

That koke tackle with the armband, He is definitly our next leader. We are better in compare of our recent matches, but still some improvments needed. Calderon is helping us a lot, The atmosphere is just wonderfull and lovely …

  • Abdil Egriøz

Am I the only like confused and mad at mandzukic for wasting that golden oppurtunity to score or atleast get a penalty??

  • Abdil Egriøz

    freaking overtime

  • Kris

    PKS…

  • Adnan Khan

    What was that?

  • Adnan Khan

Hohoho. A hard fought victory. A great game

  • Kris

I really feel sorry for Kiessling man. I am fucking happy that Atleti won though!! My shirt is wet as fuck.. And I am.. .OH MY GOD!! ATLETI!ATLETI!ATLETI! AUPA ATLETI!!!!

  • Abdil Egriøz

I AM SOOOOOOOO HAPPY RIGHT NOW. THIS WILL BE THE BEST SLEEP FOR THE LAST 5 WEEKS BUT GOD IT WAS NERVE-RACKING TILL THE END

  • Kris

Absolutely euphoric moment.. I can’t describe how happy I am..!!

  • Max Huber

Ping-pong-football through 120 min, but really deserved victory!

  • Chewie

It’s like Simeone read our criticism and did what was expected of him. With a bit of luck, of course. Who would’ve thought Oblak would become one of the heroes? Well, as we were heading to overtime, I did think that he is a better choice for the penalties, and he delivered. Arda proved all us critics wrong – he is a man of immense talent, outrageously good. A display for ages from him. Miranda stepped up as a real man and Suarez was surprisingly sharp. Took his penalty like there was no keeper in the goal. Garcia a bit disappointing but he had his chance that reminded what he’s here for, and he won fought furiously for the aerial dominance. Gamez, as expected, was not much worse than Siqueira, though still quite bad was his crosses and long throws. Koke’s corners mostly off target yet his passing is getting as good as ever. Mandzukic the least impressive. But the most credit is to Arda and Simeone. Holy crap, that was intense!

  • Adnan Khan

I am feeling like we won the champions league haha. I can’t remember the last time my heart beat that fast

  • koke6

So, inspite of all the negativity from a lot of people, we won and it was not like we scraped through or something. We dominated them for long periods created many chances and didn’t let them create. So that was a convincing and well deserved win.

  • Chewie

It was a brilliant performance by Bayer. I mean, world-class defending all the way. No wonder they won their last 5 games. The nerves got to them, though.

  • Kris

Yes. Credits to Simeone today.. He was very unlucky, or else this game would have been won way before extra time.

  • Kris

Bayer defended like we did last season. Only thing that was missing from them was the attacking intent. It was like they almost wanted this game to go to overtime and then penalties. I liked our game today though. I think improvement, but we HAVE to bury the chances we get..

  • Abdil Egriøz

With the win and all, I just hope for the future we will stop with the long throw ins, it’s a complete waste of time if you ask me, and what has happened to the goals we used to score from setpieces? Yeah the first goal came as a rebound from a freekick but we have become too less efficient in that area.

  • Adnan Khan

Vicente Calderon showed it’s might. And the fans proved why they are called one of the best fans of the world!

  • Kris

Gamez is just so shit at left back. Idk why Simeone doesn’t trust Ansaldi. Honestly think Ansaldi is the most versatile fullback we have.

  • Kris

You don’t even know man. I didn’t watch like half the penalty shots, especially the last one from Kiessling. Oblak is the man. Looked so happy after the shootout.

  • Kris

I saw a lot of improvement from the Espanyol game.

  • Abdil Egriøz

I was very impressed by Ansaldi in the games he played, he is miles better than gamez and siqueira but for some reason after Ansaldi has become available again Simeone hasn’t used him. But for what I’ve heard it was to recover Ansaldi fully, so he wouldn’t get injured again

  • Adnan Khan

    Neither did Arda 😛

Oblak showed good keeper knowledge by staying calm instead of just picking a side and collected calhanouglu’s penalty easily.
It will be fun to watch him grow in atleti

  • AndersAT

    Monaco… Please Monaco!

  • Abdil Egriøz

I kinda have the feeling we’ll meet bayern but oh god that wouln’t be ideal

  • Kris

I would love Bayern. Wouldn’t be a shame losing against them, and BEATING them would be something spectacular.

  • AaX

    ONLY IN THE FINAL.

  • You know, some people also said before the previous draw :
    Leverkusen, please Leverkusen !

If the true Atleti play, they can knock Bayern out, but if it’s the Atleti of last month, they will lose against Monaco or Porto

  • pahas

Good performance but I have to say a bravo to leverkusen and especially to their goalkeeper I really liked him and we can make a move for him

  • koke6

Oh yeah!! Have to credit their defending and intensity. They set thier team up to win the first balls and the second balls( they won most of it in the first leg) but in the game simeone got his tactics right as we won most of the first balls and the second balls. But, inspite of that they maintained thier organisation at the back and defended amazingly as a team.

  • AndersAT

    A bit pessimistic huh…

Yes and i am still glad we got lerverkusen, otherwise we might have been knocked out.
