Player Of The Month – January

Rising French star unsurprising winner of January gong

Club Atletico de Madrid v Levante UD - La Liga

January saw Fernando Torres return to Atlético Madrid some 7 and a half years later, and rediscover his goalscoring touch in a series of games against Real Madrid and Barcelona. However, for the Player of the Month award there was only ever one real contender.

After ending December in rampant style with a second half hat-trick away at Athletic Bilbao, winger Antoine Griezmann has continued in the same vein of form since the turn of the year and scored 5 goals in January with a string of impressive showings.

The 23 year-old Frenchman didn’t enjoy the easiest of starts to life in red and white, and up until recently was struggling to hold down a regular starting spot as he took time to learn the system and style of play.

However, in recent weeks he has really come into his own, and started to justify the €30m we splashed out to secure his services in the summer. Fans in the Calderón are now being treated to his clever movement, joyous technique and confident finishing on a regular basis.

The month started at home to Levante, and with Torres watching in the crowd, Griezmann stole the show with a headed goal in either half to help secure a 3-1 win. Four days later, he put in an all action performance as Real Madrid were put to the sword in the Copa del Rey.

A week later, he set up both goals as Torres’ hit a double in the Bernabéu, and followed that up with another derby double, this time against Rayo Vallecano.

Despite crashing out of the cup at the hands of Barcelona, we still managed to end January on a high note, and there was yet more delight for Griezmann back on incredibly waterlogged Basque soil.

The former Real Sociedad man thrived in the heavy rain against Eibar, scoring the opener and setting up the second goal in another win that keeps up the pressure at the top of the league ahead of Saturday’s Madrid derby.

If Atleti are to get anything against their city rivals, they will need Griezmann on top form as he could well be the key man in attack. In this form, you wouldn’t bet against him.

Just how good can Antoine Griezmann become? The blond hair, yes or no?

  • Chewie

Robin Hood. No blond hair, a clean shave and our female following will increase by 15%. Pair him with Torres, and we could start a fashion line with Cholo’s suits as the first product..

  • This is not an award for his 5 goals and one assist, because Messi scored 6 goals and made 3 assists in January,
This is an award for his successful adaptation to a different style, and it’s not easy as it seems, and you can ask Cerci, who – while Grizi was tearing Real Madrid apart – was playing against Sassuolo and Atalanta .. and losing to them .. at home, just because he couldn’t or didn’t want to adapt to our style
