Spanish sports blog sportYou confirms suspicions that Quique Sánchez Flores doesn’t want to rush Filipe Luís back into action.
The star left-back came in from Deportivo la Coruña this summer to much fanfare and most Atlético supporters expected the Brazilian to be an instant starter for us this season.
Upon his arrival, however, Quique sat down with Filipe and told him that the club wanted to be cautious with him, given that he was coming off recent recovery from his horrific ankle injury.
According to the report, even the 25-year old’s team-mates have said that despite his great quality, Filipe does not appear to be in top form.
Atleti’s manager feels that it would be unfair to the team to start the former Deportivo man in place of long-time Colchoneros who are perfectly fit to play.
Filipe apparently understood the team’s logic initially, but was nonetheless a little disappointed with the situation. He has reportedly confessed to his closest friends that he misses Coruña, and spends most of his free time in Madrid with his girlfriend and former Real Madrid team-mate Álvaro Arbeloa.
Sánchez Flores remains confident that Filipe will triumph at Atleti, but wants to shelter him from the pressures of the very demanding Vicente Calderón. The coach will continue to monitor the player until he is back in peak condition and ready to compete at the highest level.
