The worst kept secret in football over the last couple of days has been made official, with the club website officially announcing that Fernando Torres will return to his boyhood team on the 5th January, the day the Italian transfer window opens.
It will be an 18-month loan deal, as reported, and will keep him at Atlético until at least the end of next season. At this point, it is expected that Torres will become a free agent.
Fernando still needs to undergo a medical in Madrid, and will be on the first flight back from Dubai, where his old team AC Milan are preparing to play Real Madrid in an exhibition match.
There has been no confirmation of Alessio Cerci’s move in the opposite direction, but you can expect this announcement over the next couple of days.
Torres returns to the Calderón with 91 goals to his name in the red-and-white of Atlético. How long until he reaches 100?
If all goes well, the first match he will be eligible for will be against Real Madrid at home in the first leg of the Copa del Rey.
On Twitter, Torres confirmed he was overjoyed.
