Atlético await Champions League fate

Atleti will found out their opponent in the last 16

Griezmann could become second Atleti player ever to make the podium

The draw for the last 16 of the Champions League takes place in Nyon today, with Atlético set to find out who stands in their way of reaching the quarter-finals for the second successive year.

Last year, Atleti saw off the challenge of AC Milan, as they followed up a hard-fought 1-0 away win with a 4-1 thumbing of the Italian superstars at the Vicente Calderón.

Atleti are seeded for the draw, and will face one of the teams that finished second in their qualifying groups.

We can’t meet Juventus again, who qualified with us from the group stages. All of the other runners-up are fair game.

Possible opponents are: Basel, Bayer Leverkusen, Arsenal, Manchester City, Paris St-Germain, Schalke and Shakhtar Donetsk.

The first leg will be played away from home on the 17/18 and 24/25 of February.

The return leg at the Vicente Calderón will be played on the 10/11 and 17/18 of March.

Preferred opponents

In terms of who I would like to see us draw, you would have to say that Schalke and Shakhtar Donetsk were the obvious choices.

However I wouldn’t be too sad to see us draw Arsenal, especially after their recent performances in the league.

Avoiding Manchester City would be a good move – they are resurgent after squeezing through the group stages.

It’s just over two hours until the draw – let me know which draw you want!
