On Saturday, the Manuel Martínez Valero will host the match between Elche and Atlético Madrid. The match will kick off at 16:00 CEST.

Elche last played Real Sociedad in league action losing 3-0 after Carlos Vela scored a hat trick. The score, however, flatters Real Sociedad too much. If forward Jonathas had brought his shooting boots the game might have been different.

In the midweek Copa del Rey action, Elche faced off against Valladolid on Tuesday. The match in the Jose Zorilla stadium ended in a dull nil-nil affair.

Sitting in 19th place with 10 points, Elche has to win in order to move out of the relegation zone.

Following Levante, Elche is the team that has conceded the most—27 goals in just 10 matches.

Atlético is currently enjoying a four game winning streak, beating Málaga, Olympiacos, Deportivo and L’Hospitalet. Atlético rested key players in the match against L’Hospitalet and still managed to win with a comfortable 3-0 scoreline.

Elche coach, Fran Escribá says that the match against the champions is one of maximum difficulty, but that Elche has their options and will not give up.

“We will have to attack as well because only defending against a team like Atlético will make our winning chances very slim,” said Escribá in a press conference. “In terms of tactics, I think we have studied Atlético’s style of play very well, but that does not guarantee anything. Although, I think that the team is ready to compete and play a great match tomorrow,” further explained Escribá.

Cholo was quick to praise Elche’s forwards stating that they are the reference points for the team.

“I’m expecting a tough and difficult match where we will have to bring a high level of intensity in order to keep the match in our hands,” said Cholo Simeone.

Following Ansaldi’s knee injury during practice, Siqueira will be given a chance to be a starter in league action once again. Siqueira’s last league match was in the 2-1 loss at Anoeta against Real Sociedad; the Brazilian left back received a red card that match.

“Football always give players chances and Guilherme has been working hard. Maybe in some key moments he didn’t have the fortune to make good decisions and I hope that in this match he will play very well,” explained Cholo in a pre-match press conference. “Offensively he is a very important player for the team and I hope he can keep growing defensively because he has been working very hard to improve.”

Joao Miranda will be joining Ansaldi to watch the match from the sidelines. The Brazilian center back is still not healed from his injury and Giménez will play once again. The club is hopeful that Miranda will make his come back against Juventus on Tuesday.

Raúl García has the opportunity to play his 300th match as an Atlético de Madrid player. However, Cholo did not give any hints on whether he or Griezmann will play.

“I’m not sure whether we’ll play a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-4-2 tomorrow,” explained the Colchonero boss.

If Atlético wins the match they will sit comfortably in second place with 32 points.

    That was a pretty goal.

  • Kris

What a nice goal. Great triangle with Siqueira, Koke, and Arda.

  • Our Gimenez seems to be better striker than our Jimenez. 😀

  • Brad

We’re giving up a lot of corners to Elche

  • Kris

Lol. I know it’s just a joke but Jimenez needs more playing time for him to score. The guy’s not being treated the best in terms of playing minutes. You can see on the field now that he is better than when he first arrived. Making smarter and faster decisions.
