Player Of The Month – October

Turkish wizard sweeps October prize

Arda celebrates his winner vs. Juventus

Arda celebrates his winner vs. Juventus

Despite a disappointing defeat at Valencia in the first league match of the month, Atleti enjoyed a successful October with 4 wins from 5, and made good progress in our Champions League group which we now sit top of.

There were a few strong contenders for the best player award, including top scorer Mario Mandžukić and Miguel Ángel Moya, who kept four clean sheets and continued to cement his place as our number one. Koke also had another good month, having taken home the September accolade.

However, the genius behind many of our better performances was the excellent Arda Turan, who shone in particular upon returning after the International break and secured a crucial defeat of Juve with a well-taken winning goal late on in the match.

The little Turk was also heavily involved in our 2-0 success over Espanyol, leaving to a standing ovation, and had perhaps his best game of the season against Malmö, as the team turned on the style with five second half goals.

After the big money arrivals of Antoine Griezmann and Alessio Cerci over the summer, some suggested that Arda’s place in the team could be under threat and he may no longer be one of the first name’s on the teamsheet, especially on the back of fitness problems towards the end of last season that saw him miss the title run-in and Champions League final.

Since returning from injury in September though, our number 10 has been an ever-present and is playing better than ever, strengthening the Ardaturanismo legacy with a sublime finish that silenced the Bernabéu in his first appearance of the season.

That goal also saw him realise something he had dreamt of since the day he signed for Atlético, and just a few weeks ago he re-iterated his desire to stay with the Rojiblancos for many more years.

We sincerely hope that this is the case and that he remains in the same vein of form for the rest of the season, as when Arda plays, the team plays.

How impressed have you been with Arda this season? Do you agree with our choice?

  • I choose another player who you didn’t even mention among the contenders :
Juan Francisco Torres .. or as he like to be called : Juanfran

Arda was great, but Juanfran was impressive, he is definitely the best RB in Europe at the moment, and with Filipe’s departure and with his 2 replacements still trying to fit in, he took extra responsibilities than last season, and he didn’t let us down, and in the only defeat in October he was on the bench
He was the main supplier for Arda and other attackers, and despite being 2 years older than him and running more than him (due to his position) he never gets tired or injured (Masha’Allah), while the Turk is usually replaced after 60-70 minutes

  • Amr Misir Mukadaffi

I would say Godin.. Not only is he the best defender in the world, but also a great header.. Very dangerous with corners. Never gives up, and it was because of him that Courtois had so many clean sheets.. Wasn”t it for Godin, than Courtouis would never be the goalkeeper he is now…

  • Luis

Completely agree with this. With this team still trying to gel, Arda has truly stepped up and lead from the front. Not only displaying his skill but also maturity this past month.
