Match preview: Getafe vs. Atlético

Gabi returns as Atleti face cross-town neighbours

Getafe beating Sociedad

The focus shifts back to the league on Sunday evening as Atlético make the short journey south across Madrid to take on Getafe at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez.

Kick-off is set for 21:00 CEST.

It’s the first match for los rojiblancos since the 5-0 thumping they handed out to Malmo in the Champions League on Wednesday evening.

It was a fantastic team performance and reassured fans that Atlético can shift up a gear when they need it.

It’s also Getafe’s first match after the incredible 2-1 victory at Anoeta against Real Sociedad. Yoda scored both goals in the final minutes to give the victory to los azulones.

Atleti can go within two points of the top of table with a win over their neighbours, after their fiercer Madrid rivals beat Barcelona 3-1 at the Bernabéu on Saturday evening.

However, the showdown between rivals is the furthest thing from the players’ minds, according to our goalkeeper, Miguel Ángel Moyá.

“We don’t care about El Clásico,” Moyá told the media on Satuday morning. “The match against Getafe is the important one.”

“Not only because it is our next match, but it’s important that we keep on winning to achieve our goals.”

“We want to compete with everyone – and the best way to do that is to win and get closer to the teams ahead of us with three points.”

Moyá, of course, joined Atleti in the summer from Getafe and this will be the first time the goalkeeper faces off against his former club.

“I wish Getafe the best, and always want them to win, except when they are facing Atlético,” Moyá joked.

Moyá isn’t the only player facing off against his old team. Atlético’s trip to Getafe means that Juan Valera gets to play against Atleti, the team he joined as a promising 21-year-old back in 2005.

Simeone received the good news that Gabi is available again after missing out through injury against Malmo; however, Tiago and Ansaldi are still out with knocks.

Our coach faced the media on Saturday and was asked what he thought about our team sharing the goals this season. Unlike previous seasons, it isn’t only the centre forward with his name on the scoresheet.

In our match against Malmo on Wednesday, Atleti had five goals through five different scorers.

“The characteristics of the players changes the way we play. The team is improving; against Espanyol, Sevilla and Juventus, we played very well,” said Cholo.

“The team allows more people the opportunity to get into the box, and we look for any way of scoring that we have.”

Atleti have had 10 different scorers so far this season in the league, and our top scorer is Miranda, with three.

Mandzukic has scored two so far in the league and he managed to get his name on the scoresheet against Malmo for his second Champions league goal this season.

“For Mandzukic, the goal at the near post was important, because he had been playing well and bringing other players into the game,” Simeone said. He doesn’t seem worried.

Our defence will be unchanged from the win in midweek, with Godin and Miranda partnering up after the latter missed last week’s win against Espanyol.

Up front, Alessio Cerci is available for selection again after missing out the game against Espanyol through suspension.

Cerci scored his first goal for Atleti in stoppage time against Malmo, and will be looking for the opportunity to double his tally if he’s given a chance against Getafe.

Also in contention to start up front with Mandzukic are Griezmann, Raúl García and Raúl Jiménez.

Getafe go into the win unbeaten in three, with seven points from their last three matches.

“Our confidence is different. We’re going to play this match with a high self esteem – we want to play a good match and get three points,” Juan Valera told the press before the game.

Getafe’s boss, Cosmin Contra couldn’t help but praise Atlético.

“In football we can beat anybody. Atleti are super favorites and they have pressure mounted against them because they can’t drop points if they want to be up there with Barcelona and Madrid”, said the Romanian coach. “I would like it if they could challenge for the league again, and I think they’re going to do so. But of course we can beat them.”

  • I know you are talking in perspective -since it’s a La Liga game- but I don’t like judging the team and the players by making statistics about La Liga alone, we always talk about Raul Garcia’s 17 goals in all competitions last season, not just the 9 in La Liga

10 different players have scored goals in La Liga this season, but they are 12 in La Liga & UCL, beside 8 different assistants
and Mandzukic is the top scorer of the team with 5 goals, in 878 minutes of play, out of 1170 possible minutes
That’s my way at least, and it’s very different than MARCA’s & AS’s way

Three things I want from this game :
    1- Clean sheets
    2-Another goal “orgy”
3-To put on that “three shades of grey” away kit
Getafe are one of the few teams in La Liga that our grey kit could work against them,
beside, if we wore the home kit we would have to wear red shorts, and I think many people hate that, not just me
while wearing last season’s yellow kit is just depressing and pathetic

  • Chewie

Well, I hope Getafe experience all shades of defeat.

  • Brad

Finally I can actually watch a game after the past two taking place before I was awake or while I was at work.

  • Chewie

Beautiful game – tempo, width, combinations, all is top-notch. The only thing missing is goals.

  • Chewie

Siqueira is shining. Garcia with godlike tackles. Griezmann and Turan always dangerous.

  • Chewie

The orgy is officially on. It was only a matter of time, really.

  • Brad

And Frente Atletico is outsinging the Getafe fans

  • Amr Misir Mukadaffi

We need to win this game, our rivals Sevila and Valencia also won.

  • Brad

Red card to Alexis…but it’s mostly the ref’s fault

  • Brad

and yellow to miranda…because the ref shouldn’t even be allowed to officiate a youth match

  • Chewie

    Getafe is pathetic.

  • Chewie

WTF was that about Alexis and Mandzukic? And they call Atletico rude.

  • Brad

Getafe is the negative example for promotion/relegation…they somehow manage to stay up each year

  • Brad

and the player stepping on Mandzukic while he was down…

  • Amr Misir Mukadaffi

Miranda : Arda, if he manages to slip away, just get him.. You dont have a yellow card.

  • Brad

    This ref is terrible…

  • Chewie

No orgy but still a win. Oddly enough, after the red card Getafe played only better and we returned to the old ways of all-defensive game. However, the insane race is still on – five teams competing for the leadership is something new!

  • atleti10

Not sure how anyone could be happy with that performance. Dont get me wrong a wins a win but the players looked tired and lacked that extra gear. I think had Saul played in Kokes position and Koke behind Mandzukic things would have been better. In the 4-4-2 theres no link between the forwards and midfield. RG8 great tracking back but pretty poor going forward.

Anyway back to Madrid with 3 points. Aupa Atleti

  • atleti10

Pity it had to be this one you were free for.

  • Brad

I’ve seen plenty of good games. The past few were just inconveniently timed and I was absent from my usual game time commenting!
