Atlético Madrid face a very tough task if they are to reach the semi-finals of this season’s Copa del Rey, with familiar opponents standing in their path.
With the round of 32 match against CE L’Hospitalet to contend with first, Atleti could then have to face Real Madrid in the round of 16.
If we can best our fierce rivals across two legs, it looks like we would have to face another team from Catalonia, although this one has a little more prestige.
If they can see off the challenge of SD Huesca, Vallodolid or Elche, it would be Barcelona standing in our way of the semi-finals.
Possible final opponents would include Malaga, Deportivo, Valencia and Sevilla.
First though, we will have to contend with L’Hospitalet, a team who play in the same tier of football as Atlético’s reserve side, the Segunda B.
The first leg is away from home, and will be played at the Estadi La Feixa Llarga, which has an artificial pitch, on Wednesday the 3rd of December.
We then welcome the minnows to the Vicente Calderón a fortnight later, on the 17th of December.
If Real Madrid can beat Cornella, it sets up a repeat of last year’s semi-final, which saw us lose 5-0 on aggregate.
