September was an up and down month for Atlético given the high standard we have been accustomed to under Diego Simeone, but there were still plenty of moments to savour for the Rojiblanco faithful.

Arda Turan’s wonderful winner in the Bernabéu was no doubt the highlight, although it didn’t prove enough for him to take our new Player of the Month, nor have two goals from centre-back Miranda that leave him top of the club scoring charts in La Liga so far this season.

Instead, the award goes to midfield dynamo Koke, who’s goal and five assists – one in every game he played – saw him edge in front of the competition and follow on from Diego Godín, our MVP for August.

However, it wasn’t just the Spanish International’s impressive productivity that made him stand out, and this month in particular he has started to show he may be ready to drop back into his natural central midfield position, especially given that Mario Suárez and in particular Gabi have had fitness problems.

The captain was withdrawn midway through our derby win on the 13th, after which Koke took the reins in midfield and played a key role in seeing the game out and securing a crucial result.

He then played at the heart of our midfield in the following two league games against Celta and Almería, before putting in a man of the match performance in the final game of the month; a memorable 4-0 drubbing of rivals Sevilla.

After opening the scoring, the 22 year-old shone throughout, and put the gloss on a dominant showing both individually and collectively by setting up Raúl Jiménez’s first goal in red and white with a typically precise set-piece cross late on.

Saúl’s emergence has drawn comparisons with his fellow cantera graduate, who made a similar path into the team under Quique Sánchez Flores back in 2011.

Do you agree with our choice? Which other players impressed you during the month?

  • for me it’s hard to choose between Koke, Juanfran & Moya

The goalkeeper did a great job, although in some games he wasn’t even tested and in others he conceded 2 & 3 goals, but the 3 games against Real Madrid showed a great quality of him, especially the one that was in September, the one in La Liga
He made more than 5 magnificent saves that helped us to win the super cup and the 3 points
I thought I’m gonna miss Courtois very much in those 3 games, but I didn’t .. nobody did

And I don’t know what to say about Juanfran, and how to thank him for staying with us and refusing Arsenal who were ready to triple his salary
He is definitely the best RB in Spain and one of the best 5 in the world, and the only one who doesn’t see that is del Bosque who keeps rotating between him and Carvajal

About Koke : he still not Koke of last season, but for me to still choose him in a list of 3 and for you to pick him as player of the month says it all about him
But despite being player of the month in many polls and in many opinions, he surely needs some rest
He is one of the fewest top level players who has played it all so far this season, or almost all, of 15 games with Atleti and Spain he only missed 13 minutes against Macedonia, 1337 minuets of 1350 possible

And since you mentioned Saul, the 179 minutes he played in September don’t give him any chance to compete for player of the month, but they don’t prevent him from being the good surprise and the big emergence of the season

by the way, he scored an own goal today in the 1-2 loss of Spain vs Serbia and they are not going to play in U-21 Euro 2013
and I actually believe this is a good thing, it’s unnecessary tournament for him and for his two brothers and our two loaness Oliver & Manqui, a waste of time and effort for 3 players who play regularly with 3 of the biggest clubs in the world

    good job Saul 😉

Koke’s choice is highly controversial IMHO. He is not playing at the same level as last season and Im sure we will see a better version of him later on.

I would vote for Arda who has been crucial in the last important games.

  • “There can be only one!” And so this makes things difficult because Atletico is a team, oriented team. In other words, Atletico is not built around one or two players. Atletico itself is filled with the unsung hero’s of La Liga, Europe and the world. Since they have arrived onto the pitch with Atletico, they have started to get the recognition they deserve. I look at two of the biggest losses and then look at the replacements. With that stated, I am going to go with Moya. Other than the catastrophe against Valencia, he has surpassed expectations. I expect Koke and Arda to be fantastic, but I did not expect this from Moya. So he gets my vote.

All about opinion guys. Personally disagree with you on Koke, the team as a whole obviously isn’t hitting the heights of last year but I’ve been impressed with him still, was in the stadium for Juve and he was excellent (although that game was technically October).

Not having Costa to service obviously limits him a bit, so getting an assist in every game he played is pretty good going, albeit 4 of them from set pieces.
