Atlético take on Eibar this evening in the second round of La Liga, knowing that anything less than a win would mean a disastrous start to their title defence.

It all kicks off at the Vicente Calderón at 21:00 CET.

The match comes on the back on a poor performance in round 1, where an improved Rayo Vallecano side from last season held Atlético to a goalless draw in Vallecas.

Having played Real Madrid twice within a week in their Supercopa clash, Atleti were poor, and some would argue were lucky to leave with a point.

Simeone’s side will look to improve and add their first win of the season, but they will have to cope without Simeone again. This will be the first of a four game La Liga ban for his antics in the Supercopa against Real Madrid.

This game will be a perfect opportunity to prove they can dig deep and perform without Cholo on the touchline.

Next up is La Liga newbies Eibar, and travel to the Calderón after a historic 1-0 victory over Real Sociedad last week, in their first ever La Liga game. Eibar come into La Liga after back-to-back promotions, and the promoted side will be keen to impress against the Spanish champions.

This will no doubt be a very special game for the club, as the long wait to receive the La Liga trophy will finally be over.

It has been 104 days since Diego Godin’s header crowned Atleti Campeones for the first time since 1995/1996 in one of the best finales to La Liga ever.

However, due to the fact Angel Maria Villar, the head of the Spanish Football Association, was travelling and unable to attend the finale, Atleti have had to wait to get their hands on the trophy.

If Atleti are to retain their title, they will have to replicate the home form they showed last year. The Calderón became a fortress, winning 14 games and drawing 4.

Simeone hopes the fans can help the team to all 3 points.

“We need to gain a good result from Because the support encourages us to keep working hard on the training ground stands. It’s our first game back at the Calderón since the Real Madrid game and we hope the fans as answer like they always do,” he said at the pre-match press conference.

It may be early in the campaign, but already trailing Real Madrid and Barcelona by 2 points, this is a must win game for the rojiblancos, ahead of another tough trip to the Bernabeu next week.

Meanwhile, three Atleticos have been selected for Spain’s internationals against France and Macedonia. Raul Garcia gets his first call up to the senior squad, whilst Koke and Juanfran join him.

“It’s wonderful to be recognised for your hard work and that’s something that makes me very happy,” our resident number 8 told the media.

Arda will miss the game with a hamstring injury, whilst Eibar will be without Kijera and Dídac Vilá. Raul Garcia makes it back into the squad after missing last weeks game due to suspension.

Atlético match selection:
Goalkeepers: Moyá, Oblak, Juanfran
Defenders: Gámez, Miranda, Godín, Giménez, Ansaldi, Siqueira
Midfielders: Gabi, Mario Suarez, Tiago, Saúl, Koke, Cristian Rodríguez, Raul Garcia
Forwards: Griezmann, Raúl Jiménez, Mandžukić

    1. I’m really hoping Saul or Tiago starts instead of Mario – He is not good enough right now.
    2. Damn I miss Arda in the lineup
    3. Juanfran got re-schooled again? Now covering the gk-position! 😉

i know the final result wasnt good last week against rayo but on a positive note it was good to see the youngsters saul and hector get some mins in the game all summer we have been linked with attacking midfielders do yous think if we signed one would saul and hector still get enough mins? and on another note moya is doing better for us than i first thought he would do yous think he could keep number 1 spot all season? iv never seen oblak play at all so cant compare them

Can’t wait! Hope the week’s positivity with Garcia called up will help too. All set to tune in today from the U.S.

*This is the 100th game for El Cholo in la Liga as Atleti Coach

*13 players have been called to their respective national teams, including Saul who was called for Spain U-21 (of course with his brothers Oli & Manqui)

*Good thing that Kijera & Didac Vila won’t play, they are very dangerous players

who the hell are Kijera & Vila ?! .. we can’t even locate Eibar on the map !

  • Kris

Mario starting over Saul and Tiago… again?? He doesn’t provide anything in the attack, and isn’t as great defensively either. He’s been error-prone for some time now,, we need to show him that he isn’t first choice anymore and maybe then he will start working harder.

  • Brad

Miranda! (not my predicted first scorer, but i’ll take it)

  • Kris

    GOAL!!! MIRANDA!!!

  • Brad

  • Kris

First La Liga goal of many to come for Mario Mandzukic!!

  • Kris

Great goal from Eibar. Bad defending from Atleti.

  • Brad

Eibar is punching way above their weight

  • Jeronamo Pakor Jones

I’m going to blame everything on mario suarez even when it isn’t his fault

  • Brad

    2-1 at HT

  • Kris

    Mario Suarez out-Saul in.

  • Kris

Mario Suarez fucking up again. Goddamn, he’s horrible!

  • Kris

  • Kris

We are being outplayed by Eibar!!! Ffs, EIBAR!!

  • 72′: Awful display until now.

  • Are they missing Someone? Diego Costa? Tiago? Awful…

  • palestine atletico

I said that last week u called me negative… our performance is the weakest since manzano! We are suffering in midfield mario and gabi are soooooo weak plz simeone do something!
And we have shallow bench with no solutions

  • Atleti10

That was awful, koke looks completely off the pace.

  • Chewie

We’ll have the international breal and if after it the game won’t stabilize, then we’re in trouble. Watched only the second half, we were outplayed by Eibar. Two headers from set pieces and 5? yellow cards is all we could do. Eibar goal is a piece of beauty, I wish the best of lcuk to this small but proud team. They deserve to be in the first league much more than so many others. To think of it – did it look like the Spain’s reigning champion played with a team that was promoted to the top division for the first time? Not at all, it looked like we had a little more skill bit much less drive. And send Suarez to the bench, please, it’s where he belongs.

  • Brad

I’d blame the horrendous summer with the Spanish national side…
