The official club website has today announced that Tiago is set to stay with Atletico, after signing a new two-year-contract.

The 33-year-old Portugese midfielder rejected a new contract offer at Atleti last season, and looked set to re-join Chelsea under old manager Jose Mourinho.

However it looks as if he has decided the grass isn’t greener on the other side, and Tiago has agreed to play for Atletico for another two seasons.

There was a lot of bad blood at the end of last season, with reports suggesting that Tiago was walking out on the club that worked so hard to prize him away from Juventus just a few seasons ago.

It is believed that Tiago’s agent, Jorge Mendes, had been instrumental in trying to engineer a return to Stamford Bridge. When this failed to materialise, reports in yesterday’s Marca claim that the super-agent was doing his best to shop Tiago around other Spanish clubs, including Valencia.

In spite of this, Tiago will stay a rojiblanco.

“The club offered me the chance to stay. I feel proud because we had an incredible season and then I thought it was the right moment to move on. I had the chance to play in different international leagues,” he told the club’s official website.

“I took my time to look at the different options during the summer, but when it came to making the decision, I felt that only with Atleti would I be sure of not making a mistake.”

Tiago was allegedly instrumental in convincing both Filipe Luis and Diego Costa to swap the River Manzanares for the River Thames this summer, and has apparently been left fuming by the collapse of his own move to West London, now his team-mates have moved on.

The contract at Chelsea also allegedly included a coaching role for the midfielder.

Some Atleti fans won’t want to welcome back Tiago with open arms, especially with an already crowded central midfield at Cholo Simeone’s disposal.

What do you make of Tiago’s return? Does this halt the progress of some of our young stars?

  • Dircil

he has been solid throughout the last season! He can be a good sub for Mario and Gabi so there is no point to welcome him back!

  • Erik

It is too bad he wanted to leave. He lost points with me when he did that. But, he knows Simeone’s system, he is a team player and that can only help the team. If you think about it, he may be a good luck charm. Since he arrived in 2010 under QuiQue Sanchez Flores, Atletico has been winning lots of silverware.
