You probably didn’t even realise, but Toledo hosted Atlético today to officially end the pre-season. The friendly, which was dedicated to the fans, ended as it began: 0-0.
Quique Sánchez Flores used today’s match to see some of the canteranos in action, while the players got to work on their condition as nearly all of them played the full ninety minutes.
Jorge Pulido made his (unofficial) debut, while captain Antonio López was surprisingly positioned in the center of defence. Quique used the match to test some new tactics and formations. Koke started out on the right, but later Simão and Alberto Perea were continuously interchanging on the wings.
On entering the field, Atlético were welcomed by a round of applause by the Toledo players and staff, honouring us for our Super Cup win. It must have reminded the players of yesterday, when thousands of fans celebrated the win in Madrid.
It was a typical pre-season friendly, with few chances in the first half. After 34 minutes Filipe delivered a good ball into the box, but Diego Costa headed it wide. Toledo were never able to threaten Joel as our defence looked solid tonight.
In the second half, when the home team seemed to tire, Atleti were able to create more opportunities. Mínguez, who had come on for Simão, missed a header and then defender Juan Valera went close with a shot from outside the box.
In the 71st minute Alberto Perea found himself one-on-one with Buyo, but a goalkeeper with such a legendary name wasn’t going to be beaten. Filipe had the last opportunity of the match, but our new signing wasn’t able to score either, as the match finished a goalless draw.
Line–up: Joel; Valera, Pulido, Antonio López, Filipe; Koke, Camacho, Mario, Simão; Perea and Diego Costa.
