Freshly arrived in Madrid, José Sosa passed his medical on Thursday and is set to begin his six-month loan spell at Atlético.

The Metalist attacking midfielder had previously played for countryman Diego Simeone when ‘El Cholo’ coached Estudiantes.

Together, they won Argentina’s top flight’s Apertura title in 2006.

Simeone’s long-time interest in acquiring the 28-year-old has been reported on often, and his arrival to the Spanish capital may push Léo Baptistão or Cristian ‘Cebolla’ Rodríguez out on loan.

Known as ‘El Principito’ (The Little Prince), Sosa has previously spent time with Bayern Munich and Napoli, in addition to Estudiantes and Metalist.

The Argentina international (19 caps), who is known for his free kick ability, will be presented at the Vicente Calderón on Friday.

“The truth is, I am happy about arriving here and having passed the medical, and I am eager to start training with Atleti as soon as possible,” Sosa told reporters following his check-up.

“This is an important club that is experiencing a good moment and it fills me with pride to belong to a team and to a fan base that is surely enjoying the team’s great moment.”

Heard he was playing well at Metalist before leaving, hopefully he can be an upgrade for Cebolla, who will probably be leaving now? Or maybe we switch to one striker and he replaces Villa in the starting lineup and plays in more of a 10 role? Or Arda/Koke play more centrally there and he plays more on the wing?

Either way, seems like an upgrade in quality for the team. Is the buy option confirmed? If so, that is great, if he is really good, then we can keep him for a year or two, if he doesn’t cut it, he can go back to beautiful Ukraine.

@starvs… I’ve seen with Metalist for 2-3 games, he was with no doubt the best player of them. I don’t really see a the really starting player, he will be a really quality player for our bench. Probably (as rumors say) he will take Leo’s place and he will play at a 4-5-1 as a ’10 or on the winds. Yes there is a buy-back cause for 10mil, but personaly I don’t really believe that we will buy him, he would be 29 at the summer and 10 mil isn’t a small amount. The only reason I see Atleti buy him is if there is a 3rd party group so maybe they will give half of them.

I would like Diego better, but well…

I think he still might be an added value, mainly due to his versatility and direct free kicks. He gives as a lot of options as Piserakos rightfully noticed. I am also hoping that profe Ortega and Cholo will make him an even better player that he was so far. He dreams of playing in the WC so he surely will be motivated.

Leo should go on loan now and I think this will be the best solution for all parties.

Suerte Principito. Hope you the best in Atleti and hope you achieve your goals…. but please… play for the team!!.

Meh… He better play well… I support Argentina when it comes to internationals but honestly i’m not big on him but if Cholo can make me eat my words about RG8 then i guess he should be fine

With his presence I can think of a scenario in which if either David Vill or Costa doesnt play well, we can withraw one of em and replace with Sosa. Then the formation switches from 4-4-2 to 4-2-3-1.

Forget about Diego – if that dumbass values money more than a chance to play UCL and be among the Spain’s top 3, then he has no real Atleti spirit. Maybe Sosa has, we’ll see soon enough.

  • please sign ronaldiniho he is in good time! think about that it’s big move and surprising.. everybody share it
