Atlético to meet Leverkusen, Rosenborg and Aris

Holders drawn to face German, Nordic and Greek opposition this season

Atletico drawn from Pot 1

Europa League holders Atlético Madrid have been drawn in the same group as Bayer Leverkusen, Rosenborg and Aris Thessaloniki in the group stages of this season’s Europa League.

The draw was made today ahead of the UEFA Super Cup Final at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco. Diego Forlán was on hand to help with the draw. He really had trouble opening the plastic balls to reveal the team names, struggling throughout. Ironic applause greeted his efforts!

Atlético were top seeds for the draw as holders, and were drawn into Group B, later to be joined by Bayer Leverkusen, who will be strong opponents with new signing Michael Ballack.

Rosenborg were then invited to the party as third seeds, a trip north to Norway on the cards for Los Rojiblancos. Finally Greek Cup winners Aris Thessaloniki were drawn into Group B to complete our draw.

It could have been a lot tougher for Atlético as we looked certain to be drawn with big-spenders Manchester City – they could only be placed in either Groups A, B or C. Luckily they were drawn into Group A against Juventus, in perhaps the tie of the round. Completing Group A were Salzburg and Rapid Vienna.

Group J is the ‘group of death’ with Sevilla, Paris-Saint Germain and Borussia Dortmund all drawn to play each other. Karpaty will have a tough job qualifying from this group.

What do you make of our group? How do you think we will fare in the Europa League this season?

The Leverkusen matches should be spectacular, as they’re great offensively! I don’t know too much about the other two opponents, but hopefully they’ll help us finish first in the group.

  • Mohammed

I don’t like Aris, they’re stadium has a bad pitch, and if we are lucky we may go through the cold weather of Norway. All in all, It’s a fair draw.

I have just been listening to Spanish radio and it is being said that because of the extreme heatwave across Spain that kick off times might all be at 9 or 10. This could affect all Atleti fans outside Spain because it could mean Barca, Real and Atleti all playing at the same time and I doubt many oversea broadcasters will put Atleti ahead of the big 2. Anyway we will keep an ear to the ground and put updates if there are any on our blog or comment here.
    Atleti hasta la muerte !

    Atlético plays on monday 😉

Hope Atleti does what needs to be done in Europe.
Leverkusen could be hard, but I rate Atlético’s prowess higher.
Rosenborg is a team you should beat.
Aris could surprise us, but I don’t think they’ll be a repeat of APOEL…

I think we could comfortably go through to the next round, I don’t really mind first or second place, but I guess first means there’s a better chance to play a lower rated team.

Cause I live in germany, I’ll definitely be at the game in leverkusen. It was my dream having leverkusen in our group 🙂

Dear Mohammed and all the rest,
the pitch of Aris’ Stadium is new and did cost over half a million euros to be replaced. Don’t say things that are not true.
    Thank you
    Lets Enjoy the match today.
