This match against the Montevideo Wanderers was our last friendly of pre-season, and the last test before our Super Cup match against Inter.
But by resting several key players Quique Sánchez Flores made it clear that this match was a mere formality. The Uruguayan opponents didn’t prove to be much of a challenge as Atlético cruised to a comfortable victory.
Atlético easily kept possession but failed to create opportunities in the final third. When Atlético scored, the goal came from a set piece. Diego Costa headed in a Jurado free kick in the 36th minute.
After the break Diego Forlán got the chance to work on his match fitness, as he got a run out. With the World Cup’s best player on Atlético went forward to increase their lead and ten minutes into the second half it was José Antonio Reyes who doubled the score.
Only minutes later, Raúl García set the final score by rifling the ball into the back of the net.
Although this victory will surely lift our confidences after a poor showing yesterday, not too much can be taken from this match. Montevideo Wanderers are currently in 13th position in the Uruguayan competition which only hosts 16 teams. This 3-0 victory means Atlético finish third in the Trofeo Colombino, after losing yesterday. Later tonight Recreativo and Sporting Gijón will fight it out for this year’s title.
