Eduardo Salvio joins Benfica on loan

Argentine starlet looks set to get some playing time in Portugal this season

Eduardo Salvio

Our young Argentine forward has joined Portugese giant Benfica on a season-long loan deal.

The 20 year-old doesn’t hold an EU passport and Atlético have decided to fill their 3 non-EU spots for the forthcoming season with Sergio Agüero, Diego Godín and Diego Costa.

If Salvio had remained in Madrid he would have been ineligible to play for the club, and the management decided a loan deal was best for the forward’s development.

Quique Sánchez Flores decided that Salvio was the one to leave the club on loan after a disappointing pre-season for the youngster. ‘Toto’ featured in nearly all of Atlético’s warm-up games but failed to impress.

Fellow South American Diego Costa did catch the eye of Flores though, who made clear his desire to keep the Brazilian at the club after a loan spell last season with Real Valladolid.

Salvio, who joined Atlético from Lanús in the recent winter transfer window for €8.5m, seems to be delighted with the move, and posted on Twitter “New player of Benfica! I am very happy.”

Atlético will be closely monitoring the player throughout the season and hope that he comes back more determined than ever to earn a starting spot with los Rojiblancos, not unlike Jose Antonio Reyes, who spent a successful season at Benfica in 2008/09.

‘Toto’ just tweeted this picture for us to enjoy!
