Match preview: Atlético Madrid vs. Sporting Gijón

The two first division sides meet in the Trofeo Colombino just a fortnight before their Liga match

Trofeo Colombino

The 46th edition of the Trofeo Colombino kicks off soon in Huelva, at the Estadio Nuevo Colombino. Today’s semi-final match is between local side Recreativo Huelva and Uruguayan Primera División side Montevideo Wanderers.

Atleti faces Sporting Gijón tomorrow, Wednesday, at 21:00 GMT+1 KO in what will be our second to last preparation match prior to the all important UEFA Super Cup final against Inter Milan on August 27.

The final and third place playoff matches of the Colombino tournament will be played on Thursday.

Manager Quique Sánchez Flores will appreciate the opportunity to finally get a good look at his new defensive line playing together as a unit. The group, composed of right back Tomás Ujfalusi, right centre back Diego Godín, left centre back Álvaro Domínguez and left back Filipe Luís, practiced together for the first time yesterday in a training game with their rojiblanco team-mates and did not concede a goal.

Another headline for our match with Gijon, in what is a dress rehearsal for the opening day of the La Liga season, is the return of Diego Forlán, fresh from his Golden Ball winning World Cup campaign. The striker returned to training last week and is ready for his first outing in an Atlético shirt since the Copa del Rey final back in May.

Quique’s 24 player match selection for the tournament, according to AS, is the following:

De Gea, Joel, Valera, Antonio López, Perea, Godín, Ujfalusi, Filipe Luis, Pulido, Domínguez, Mario Suárez, Camacho, Raúl García, Fran Mérida, Assunçao, Koke, Jurado, Reyes, Simao, Diego Costa, Salvio, Alberto Perea, Agüero and Forlán.

Left off the coach’s list were Keko, Juanito, Ibrahima, Regalón and Tiago.

It’s going to be great to see our first choice back four playing together at last! I wonder if Quique will have drilled into their heads the importance of defending set pieces properly. Filipe and Godín will have to do better!

We really suffered in the game against Mallorca and I hope we can bounce back with a comfortable win here – it would make me feel so much better about our repeat fixture on the first day of the season.

Forlán won’t be match fit but he needs games ahead of the Inter Super Cup final, I hope he starts and gets at least 50 or 60 minutes.

Would be nice if we could see Koke and Pulido in at least one of our two Colombino matches, but the important thing is to give Forlán some minutes and let our best four defenders play together.

I agree with Derek on wanting to see the young guys, but its not going to happen unless we are ahead by a large margin, because this is the dress rehearsal for the Inter game and Quique’s experiments are over, he has to go with the final list of players that will play for the Supercup against Milan.

  • Ringo Schut

I agree with Derek as well.
Javi has a point, but one player per game or the two of them in the first won’t be negative, I guess 🙂
