After the early morning practice session today, Diego Forlán gave a press conference in Majadahonda at the club’s training facilities.
Regarding the possibility of a transfer this summer, one that was filled with speculation that the world class striker would be off to a new club, the attacker said “I never saw myself leaving Atlético.”
“I don’t know anything about interest from other teams. It’s just one more summer of rumours without any concrete offers.
“I know what I’ve read in the newspapers, but I haven’t received anything from outside nor inside the club. While no offers arrive, I will not think about the future. I am very comfortable here. I have three years on contract and I am happy. My desire is to stay.”
Cachavacha is back in training with his team-mates after a quick recovery from a blister problem that prevented him from playing on Saturday in the friendly against Mallorca.
Fans will be hoping to see their beloved Cacha, along with the rest of the rojiblanco first team, in action on Wednesday against Sporting Gijón. The two Primera División sides square off in the semi-final of the Trofeo Nuevo Colombino friendly tournament in Huelva, a fortnight before their first meeting in La Liga.
The UEFA Supercup tie against Inter Milan is fastly approaching, and while the odds are stacked against us, Forlan talked up Atlético’s chances.
“Inter is a great opponent, with big players, it is a well assembled team and they have had a great year, but we also have quality and hope to do things well in order to win.”
The striker also spoke of his belief that our participation in the Europa League and Copa del Rey finals will be very helpful in this huge game.
“Last year, we played two finals, we won one and lost the other and we hope that they serve as experience, which is important.”
When asked about his fellow countryman Diego Godín, who Forlán played a key role in luring to Madrid, Forlan said:
“I have a very good relationship with him. He is a very good signing for the team. He has done very well these past years at Villarreal and in the World Cup. He continues to grow and we hope that he continues to grow here as well.”
