The disciplinary committee of the Royal Spanish Football Federation has rescinded the yellow card that Diego Costa received last Sunday against Sevilla.
Consequently, the Atlético forward will be available for his team’s vital derby clash with Real Madrid this Saturday.
According to referee González González’ report, Diego Costa was penalized for “knocking down his opponent [Sevilla’s Kondogbia] when challenging for the ball.”
The yellow card, his tenth of the season, would have led to an automatic one-game suspension for the Brazilian.
However, video evidence disproved that Diego Costa had committed a foul and hence the Rojiblancos launched a successful appeal against the decision.
Tiago returns to training
Colchonero vice-captain Tiago Mendes returned to training on Wednesday after a lengthy absence.
The Portuguese midfielder has been out of action since February, when he broke his arm in the semi-final of the Copa del Rey.
He recovered quickly from that injury, but additional muscular discomfort has kept him on the sidelines until this week.
Atleti boss Diego Simeone indicated Tiago will be a part of the squad that faces the Merengues.
“Tiago trained with us and I imagine that on Saturday he may accompany us too,” he said after training.
Arda continues recovery
Tiago’s return means the only remaining absentee is Arda Turan. The Turkish midfielder is still recovering from the ankle sprain he suffered last month against Valencia.
Cholo was cautious about Arda: “Arda is coming along and hopefully he can continue to improve. We’ll see on Friday.”
