After 14 straight wins, Atlético Madrid’s incredible home streak has finally come to an end.

Sunday night was supposed to be a festive night with all Rojiblancos celebrating Diego Simeone’s new contract, but like last season Real Sociedad spoiled a Colchonero party at the Vicente Calderón.

The visitors scored the game’s solitary goal just after the break and defended well throughout, handing Atleti their first defeat at home.

Thibaut Courtois set a new record, but also had his amazing run of home games in La Liga without conceding a goal end at 820 minutes. When Xabi Prieto scored a goal in the second half, the Belgian shotstopper had already shattered Abel Resino’s record by a little over half an hour.

Xabi Prieto’s goal was the first one Courtois conceded at Cholo Castle since Roland Lamah scored for Osasuna at the end of October 2012.

The goal by the right-winger was only La Real’s first real chance in the game and came right after Atleti blew an opportunity at the other end. Prieto receiving the ball in an offside position only added insult to injury.

Throughout the game Atlético fired a high number of shots, but nearly all of them came from distance and were off target, leaving Claudio Bravo with little to do. The few times he was called to action, the Sociedad ‘keeper did so brilliantly. He saved a header by Diego Godín shortly after the opening goal and pulled off an amazing save to deny Miranda.

Arda, Koke and Cebolla all missed from long range, while Radamel Falcao and Diego Costa were effectively shut down by the excellent Txuri-urdin defence.

The defeat doesn’t only mean that Atleti lose their amazing home streak and clean sheet record, but also that arch rivals Real Madrid have leapfrogged us in the standings, leaving us in third place after 27 games.

Line-up: Courtois; Juanfran, Miranda, Godín, Filipe; Arda, Gabi, Koke (“71 Adrián), C. Rodríguez (“66 Raúl García); Diego Costa and Falcao.

Goals: 0-1 Xabi Prieto (“54)

**it’s only 820 minutes for Courtois, not 831
** after Malaga game I commented here that I wish Simeone do not repeat what he did with Koke & Cebolla again against Sociedad, let’s be honest : Cebolla is not good enough to play a complete match or to start a match, Koke should have stayed at his position and there are other players who can play as a second DM beside Gabi (RG & Saul)
** against Malaga and again tonight against Sociedad, Simeone made only 2 substitutions, of course every body knows that our bench is not strong (especially with the absence of Mario & Tiago) BUT does not OLIVER deserve a chance ?!

    Xabi Prieto’s goal was offside…

I have one problem with Simeone. Whenever the team is down or against a stronger opponent, he has no faith in a “B”-player turning the game around. Oliver already tops Raul and Cebolla in creativity, he’d give a bigger chance at changing the game.

He selects a few young players, but he absolutely does not give them a lot of faith in the games.
Especially Saul, Manquillo and Oliver could have had way more minutes by now and we might have had a stronger bench by now.

He’s a great motivator and a potent tactician, but he really needs to grow in this department as a coach. Luck won’t always be on their side.

  • Iam very sorry to losse home i very wary real madrid mach

Getting sick of seeing Oliver wasted on that bench, when we all know he can pick a clever pass through a tight defence!

The substitutions annoy me also, always too late or never enough, im sorry cholo but we were 1-0 down for ages and it wasnt working, Adrian, Oliver and anyone but RG should have come on!

  • I read this article completely concerning the
difference of most recent and previous technologies, it’s remarkable article.
