Despite claims by never-in-the-loop-but-always-loopy Atlético president Enrique Cerezo that the club would not be bringing in reinforcements this winter, Atleti confirmed on Friday that Sporting CP left-back Emiliano Insúa has been signed on a three and a half-year contract.

According to MARCA, the 24-year-old former Boca Juniors, Liverpool and Galatasaray man cost los Colchoneros a fee of roughly €3.5 million.

Los Rojiblancos became increasingly concerned with Filipe Luís’ injury woes given his significant importance to the squad. His recent call-up to the Brazilian national team finally triggered the move by front office officials and coach Diego Simeone, MARCA reports, as they were worried the defender would be at an even higher risk of suffering a knock.

The defender had started 21 matches with Sporting in the present campaign. Last season, he appeared in 45 games, scoring six goals.

Though he is a native Argentine, Insúa holds a Spanish passport, Atlético stated.

The transfer suggests Simeone wasn’t confident that back-up left-back Domingo Cisma, signed this past summer, could adequately replace Filipe.

What do you think about this move?

  • Urban

Good move. Very good. Reasonable player for a reasonable price. I only wonder why did he agree to move to Atleti since he is nearing the best age for playing football and it is obvious he will be a sub.

  • Jorge

Strange move for us, I think. I don’t know anything about him, except that, coming from Sporting, he’s cup-tied, so they must figure he’s an improvement over Cisme.

  • Alex21

I like this move. I bet we will see him in the Europa more often than not. I can see Manquillo and Insua starting in defense and ensuring Felipe in Liga play.

  • super3athens

he can’t play at europa cause he played with sporting

  • Will

Yep… he’ll probably be a starter more often in La Liga. Felipe is playing nicely and deserve some rest.

  • Ahmad Hossainy

I watched this player when he was at Liverpool , good in defense , and very good in offense … I would not be surprised if he became the first choice for El Cholo at the left back .

  • aktas

He played at Galatasaray for half season, he is fast but not too much, he crosses, his defensive knowledge is ok but Felipe and Insua not comperable but I can easily say he is better than Cata Diaz(I can’t understand how he transferred to la liga)

  • 20corona

Cata Diaz is a classic CENTER back that’s why he sucks at playing left back. It’s like puting Filipe Luis as a defensive midfielder and wondering what tha hell he is doing in la liga, it’s just retarded.

  • Farid

good link i guess..when he was playing for liverpool he was one of the best attacking left back in the world !! he has an adorable head and powerful left leg 😀

  • Dircil

his market value is around € 10 million so it’s a good deal though. Additionally, he’s young so he can prove his improved ability perhaps 3 years later 🙂

  • Rojiblanco93

Why years later ? Lets just hope he getting in touch with the Cholo-Efect so we can magically expect good performances of him like we now have from Raul and Costa.

  • Ty Gambo

Because before years later there’s Filipe

  • Rojiblanco93

What is better than one Decent left back??
Two decent left backs 😉 !

  • I like him, he’s a good player.
