Despite claims by never-in-the-loop-but-always-loopy Atlético president Enrique Cerezo that the club would not be bringing in reinforcements this winter, Atleti confirmed on Friday that Sporting CP left-back Emiliano Insúa has been signed on a three and a half-year contract.
According to MARCA, the 24-year-old former Boca Juniors, Liverpool and Galatasaray man cost los Colchoneros a fee of roughly €3.5 million.
Los Rojiblancos became increasingly concerned with Filipe Luís’ injury woes given his significant importance to the squad. His recent call-up to the Brazilian national team finally triggered the move by front office officials and coach Diego Simeone, MARCA reports, as they were worried the defender would be at an even higher risk of suffering a knock.
The defender had started 21 matches with Sporting in the present campaign. Last season, he appeared in 45 games, scoring six goals.
Though he is a native Argentine, Insúa holds a Spanish passport, Atlético stated.
The transfer suggests Simeone wasn’t confident that back-up left-back Domingo Cisma, signed this past summer, could adequately replace Filipe.
