La Liga: Mallorca 1 – 1 Atlético

Atlético give away two points on Three Kings Day

Atletico Madrid Raul Garcia celebrates his goal against Mallorca

Raúl García scores his 8th of the season

Without Arda Turan, Miranda and Radamel Falcao, the trio was suspended, Atlético dropped two points on their away trip to Mallorca.

The Rojiblancos seemed to get off the island with a scrappy win, but conceded a late goal after unfortunate defending by Filipe Luís.

Atlético had taken the lead through Raúl García, who was on the right place at the right time to profit from a spilled ball by Aouate, who couldn’t hang on to Diego Costa’s effort.

It was the 8th goal of the season for Raúl, who had hit the crossbar prior to his goal when he nearly headed in a Koke corner.

Koke was one of Atleti’s better players in what was otherwise an uneventful match. His set pieces provided danger throughout the match and the midfielder almost curled in a corner kick directly in the opening minutes. Later on Diego Godín and Tiago also connected with crosses from Koke, but they weren’t able to beat the excellent Aouate.

Midway through the first half Koke launched Diego Costa with a pass from midfield, but again the Colchoneros were denied by Dudu Aouate.

In the second half Atlético increased the pressure and pinned the home side down on its own half. Filipe twice found himself in an excellent position to score, but on both occasions he unsuccesfully tried to lay it off for one of his teammates.

Atleti seemed to get away with the three points when Raúl García scored a scrappy goal in the 73rd minute, but a few minutes before the end Mallorca tied up the score. For the first time in the game Atlético struggled to clear a dangerous situation and in an attempt to get rid of the ball Filipe passed the ball straight to Kevin García. The substitute didn’t hesitate and equalized with a shot from close range.

In the added time Mallorca nearly even got the win. In the final seconds of the game they were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box, from which Mexican prodigy Giovani Dos Santos hit the post.

And so on the Día de los Reyes Magos Atlético gifted two points to Mallorca, to get off to a disappointing start of the new year. On Thursday Simeone’s men will hope to do better when they take on Getafe in the return leg of the Copa del Rey in a match which kicks off at 19.30 CET.

Line-up: Courtois; Juanfran, Cata Díaz, Godín, Filipe; Raúl García, Gabi, Tiago, Koke; Adrián (“65 Adrián) and Diego Costa.

Goals: 0-1 Raúl García (“73); 1-1 Kevin (“87)

    I hope arda doesn’t leave ;-(

  • I just watched some of the highlights. Seems like Mallorca have an attitude problem? Bad that we didn’t pick up the entire three points, but still that freekick at the end by Dos Santos was dangerous! Aupa Atléti!

The tie is probably the most fair result, albeit frustrating. Atletico controlled most of the match, but I never had the feeling like it was our game to win.

My only question regards Simeone’s substitution plan. Sure, the team was missing three starters and therefore had three fewer substitutes, but I would have liked to have seen some fresh legs on the pitch toward the end of the match.

Tiago was terrible this game, I really didn’t know he was that bad.

  • Lubo

Arjit, he was just awful yesterday. He’s worse than Raul Garcia a few years ago, when our coaches wanted Raul to play in a defensive position. Besides Mario, we have no other defensive midfielder, who can collect the balls and pass them to more creative players. Tiago isn’t a DM anyhow Cholo would want him to be and he is a disaster coming when trying to win or pass the ball. He has done a lot, but his time is up. We need a backup for Mario and I’m not sure whether Ruben Perez is able to do this job, but I hope he won’t be loaned out again (or even sold).

or we should bring back camacho. tho i think malaga wouldnt let him for cheap.

  • Javi

@ AtleticoPhilly, what are you talking about a 1-1 fair result??? Atleti dominated mallorca and mallorca only scored due to a single defensive lapse, otherwise the score would have been 0-1 which would be the only fair result for this fiasco.

  • ali_

we dominated in posession, not really in chances.
javi, u remember, we almost lost this game, cos fortunately dos santos hit the post in the end of the match. it was a bad but winnable game, yet we couldnt convert that few chances.
    and the referee was terrible.

@ Javi: In addition to the goal, Mallorca had a few good chances, including the late free kick that hit the post.
