Atlético Madrid have taken a 3-0 lead after the first game of a two-legged tie in the Copa del Rey against Getafe.
The Colchoneros overcame early chances for the visitors and scored two late goals to win by a wide margin, which should be enough to secure passage to the next round of the King’s Cup.
For the first time in this season’s cup competitions, Diego Simeone decided to field his strongest available XI, in which only Radamel Falcao was given a precautionary rest as the Colombian is nursing a minor muscle strain. He was replaced by Adrián, who unfortunately had to leave the match early after spraining his right ankle.
Before leaving the game Adrián had tried to sneak one in, but Moyá was all over it. In the opening minutes Getafe created two big opportunities to score, but Thibaut Courtois did extremely well to deny Abraham and later Miguel Torres.
In the 17th minute Diego Costa reached a Koke pass before Alexis did, and the defender brought the Brazilian down with a rash challenge. Costa himself stepped up and converted his second penalty of the Copa del Rey, after he had also scored from the spot against Real Jaén.
Diego Costa was at the end of every attack Atleti setup and nearly doubled his tally after half an hour, but after slipping past two defenders he shot straight at Moyá. The goalkeeper put up a great performance on Wednesday night and blocked a header by Costa from close range. The ‘keeper was assisted by one of his defenders who cleared the ball off the goalline.
Shortly before the break Gabi shot just wide after a short free kick taken by Koke. The young midfielder again assisted a team-mate at the start of the second half, when he delivered an accurate cross which was headed in by Diego Costa. However, the striker was undeservedly denied his second goal as he was incorrectly flagged back for offside.
After their strong start, Getafe were kept at bay and weren’t seen anywhere near Courtois again. Atlético dominated the game and looked to decide the cup tie in the home leg. The Rojiblancos again came incredibly close when Miranda, Arda and Raúl García combined to assist Diego Costa, but again Moyá had an answer to the Brazilian’s fantastic bicycle kick.
10 minutes before the end, Atlético finally were able to widen the gap with Getafe. Arda Turan’s low drive hit the post and Filipe Luis was right there for the rebound. It was only the first goal for Filipe, who is having such an outstanding campaign in red and white.
In the final minutes Atlético were rewarded for their hard work with another goal, which will allow the team to possibly rest some players in the return leg. The home side will take a 3-0 lead to the return leg at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez after Diego Costa‘s composed strike in the 88th minute. He was assisted by Gabi, who picked up the ball after Raúl García had won possession in Getafe’s half.
With his first but also the last touch of the match, Javi Manquillo hit the crossbar, leaving the score at 3-0.
