After two consecutive losses to end a long period of consecutive wins, some might have wondered how Atlético would bounce back.
Against Getafe the runners-up of La Liga showed to have overcome the disappointment, as they got back on track with a solid 2-0 win over their neighbours.
The goals on a cold night at the Vicente Calderón were scored by Adrián López and Arda Turan.
The thousands of Colombians who attended the game witnessed how their idol created Atlético’s first opportunity of the game. Falcao’s cross from the right wing was headed just wide by Raúl García. It wouldn’t be the only opportunity for the offensive midfielder, who was unfortunate with his finishing on Sunday night.
Getafe had created some danger from crosses themselves, all coming from the right foot of the excellent Pedro Léon. One of the visitors’ attacks ended up at Álvaro Vázquez but the young forward scoffed the opportunity.
Álvaro’s mishit came a few minutes after Atlético had opened the scoring. Gabi, who played his 100th league game for the Rojiblancos, swung in a fine cross towards the far post where Adrián was left unmarked. The Perfect 7 headed straight at goalkeeper Moyá but was able to finish the rebound.
It was only Adrián’s second goal this season, and his first in the Liga BBVA.
Shortly before the break Atlético doubled their lead. The referee and his assistants missed Arda Turan’s clear handball, which allowed the Turk to continue directly towards goal. Arda cleverly used Falcao alongside him to fake a pass and bring down Moyá, before calmly slotting the ball into the empty net.
In the final minute of the first half Juan Rodríguez came close with a volley towards goal, but like all other Getafe attempts tonight, his shot was off-target. After the break Atleti seemed to take their foot off the gas. Several passes were misplaced and the players failed to connect in the final third.
After an hour of play Getafe had their biggest opportunity to get one back, but another precise cross from Pedro Léon was missed completely by substitute Ángel Lafita. Atleti at the other end also wasted opportunities to score. First Radamel Falcao was unable to connect with Arda Turan’s low cross, before the Colombian himself played an inaccurate pass to Adrián a minute later.
Getafe finished the game with ten men, because they had already used up all three substitutions when Rafa injured his hamstring. Despite the advantage in numbers, Atleti didn’t push on. Koke was the Colchonero to try his luck but Moyá saved his effort comfortably, while Thibaut Courtois spectacularly saved a Pedro Léon-free kick in the added time of the game to keep a clean sheet for Atleti and secure the 2-0 win.
