AS reports that World Cup Golden Ball winner Diego Forlán arrived in Madrid yesterday, and will immediately engage in fitness sessions at the Cerro del Espino training ground today.
The Uruguayan star forward will be reuniting with his team-mates Tuesday, upon their return from Cádiz.
Forlán returns to the team following perhaps the best three months of his career. In addition to his immensely successful World Cup performance, where he scored five goals leading Uruguay to its first semi-final in 40 years, the beloved rojiblanco striker netted twice against Fulham in the Europa League final in May – including the late extra time strike that handed us our first continental title in 48 years.
The Uruguayan was voted the best player of 2010 World Cup, winning the Golden Ball award. And just this week it was announced that the national league in his homeland were naming their top-scorer trophy after the prolific striker.
New signing and centre-back Diego Godín will accompany his national team partner in what will be his first training session as a member of Atlético. The club hopes to have the Charrúa pair available for the upcoming friendly against Mallorca on Saturday.
Sergio “Kun” Agüero meanwhile, after a stellar showing in the Trofeo Ramón Carranza this weekend, will be required to join the Argentine national team in Ireland today ahead of an international friendly on Wednesday.
