Diego Simeone’s willingness to give Atlético’s up-and-coming youth players a go is proving to be inspirational for a player who is finishing up his first pre-season with the senior team.
Right-back Javi Manquillo spoke this week about how training with the first team has provided extra motivation to prepare well for the 2012/13 season.
“It clearly motivates many youth players training with the first team, the club is putting faith in the academy players and that’s good for us all,” Manquillo said.
“[Simeone] tells us to be calm. I have to work hard to earn his trust and deliver what I can for the team.
“Although he said that my team is the B team, I [still] have to work hard to hold down a position there, in the first team it is even more difficult.”
The 18-year-old, who was selected in the Spanish squad for the recent U-19 Euro Championships before being ruled out of the finals of the competition because of an ankle injury, indicated he is working towards being selected in Atlético’s squad for the upcoming Super Cup against Chelsea.
“We’ll see,” he said.
“We’re working hard to see if we can win the confidence of the coach.”
