Atlético have announced on their official website that goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois will remain in Madrid for another year, as a loan agreement with Chelsea for the young Belgian has been reached.
The news does not come as a surprise. Reports have been circulating for weeks now claiming all parties involved would be agreeable to an extension of the ‘keeper’s stay at the Vicente Calderón.
Financial details about the deal have not been released, but the Spanish press have stated on several occasions that Atleti will pay a €750,000 fee to retain their starting goalie, who played a crucial role in helping los Rojiblancos to their second Europa League title in three years.
According to ABC Punto Radio reporter Diana Sanchidrián, there is no clause in the agreement preventing Courtois from taking part in the UEFA Super Cup.
Barring a major surprise, the 20-year-old will be facing off against his parent club in Monaco on the 31st of August.
