Atlético Madrid announced their first signing of the summer on Monday evening, with an agreement reached with FC Porto winger Cristian ‘Cebolla’ Rodríguez for the next four years.
The 26-year-old winger will arrive on a free transfer after his contract at the Estadio Dragão expired, and will re-unite with International teammate Diego Godín and former Porto star Radamel Falcao.
With 47 caps for Uruguay to his name, Rodríguez brings experience to our attack for next season, and also has the advantage of holding an Italian passport.
The signing will come as surprise to Atleti supporters as there had been no suggestion of any interest in the media, and is also likely to end speculation linking us with Diego Capel and Chori Castro.
Speaking on his new acquisition, sporting director José Luis Caminero was full of praise.
“He is a very offensive player with a lot of pace and character,” he said. “He is a winner.”
“A lot of variations will be offered in attack with this signing, as he is very versatile and can operate on either flank.”
Worryingly, Cebolla has only started six of Porto’s league matches in the last two seasons, and has only played regularly in one of his four years with the Dragons.
However, he has managed three league titles in his time in Portugal, and also won the Europa League alongside Falcao last year.
Despite his problems with injury, the man they call ‘the onion’ for his ability to make opponents cry has always been an undoubted talent, and could turn out to be a shrewd piece of business if able to stay fit.
Are you pleased with the signing of Cristian Rodríguez? Who else would you like to see come in?
