Atlético confirm Cristian Rodríguez deal

Uruguayan winger signs contract until 2016

Cebolla is the first signing of the Simeone era

Atlético Madrid announced their first signing of the summer on Monday evening, with an agreement reached with FC Porto winger Cristian ‘Cebolla’ Rodríguez for the next four years.

The 26-year-old winger will arrive on a free transfer after his contract at the Estadio Dragão expired, and will re-unite with International teammate Diego Godín and former Porto star Radamel Falcao.

With 47 caps for Uruguay to his name, Rodríguez brings experience to our attack for next season, and also has the advantage of holding an Italian passport.

The signing will come as surprise to Atleti supporters as there had been no suggestion of any interest in the media, and is also likely to end speculation linking us with Diego Capel and Chori Castro.

Speaking on his new acquisition, sporting director José Luis Caminero was full of praise.

“He is a very offensive player with a lot of pace and character,” he said. “He is a winner.”

“A lot of variations will be offered in attack with this signing, as he is very versatile and can operate on either flank.”

Worryingly, Cebolla has only started six of Porto’s league matches in the last two seasons, and has only played regularly in one of his four years with the Dragons.

However, he has managed three league titles in his time in Portugal, and also won the Europa League alongside Falcao last year.

Despite his problems with injury, the man they call ‘the onion’ for his ability to make opponents cry has always been an undoubted talent, and could turn out to be a shrewd piece of business if able to stay fit.

Are you pleased with the signing of Cristian Rodríguez? Who else would you like to see come in?

  • Javi Lozoya

I guess Chori Castro isn’t coming them… About the Cristian Rodriguez signing I don’t know. He is coming for free, he is a versatile player, has EU passport, but like I said, I think the club needs to invest in other positions.
We need a decent DM fo’ shizzle. We also need to sign Diego or another creative midfielder and need a back up striker for Falcao. Also, I hope Cebolla Rodriguez arrival doesn’t no mean Salvio is leaving.
But yes, Rodriguez is a good signing, and should give us more depth offensively.

  • shay

    Nice backup..

  • Yon

Mendes will somehow be involved and making money from this………..

  • Very good back-up, experienced player. Another player(s) I’d Like to see is Yilmaz(Striker), Diego(permanent signing),
Rossi(Striker Villarreal) and a good solid defensive midfielder

  • This is very good of Simeone because I remember when Adrian came in (he was a free agent as well) I hope Rodriguez turn out like Adrian. Because Adrian came as a free and look what he has achieved in his first season(WINNER in Europa League)

  • shlomgar

I’m with you Randy though two new strikers are way to many for us to handle right now, either Rossi or Yilmaz with a Rossi preference for his experience.

Diego, king of the Vicente Calderon. Please stay!

  • Javi Lozoya

Rossi is gonna be out until 2013…

  • Urban

Diego is not going to stay, face it lads. The Man With The Curvy Face said that the objective is to keep 10 players from the first squad. He didnt give any names, but we can all guess he didnt mean Mario to leave….

Dont get me wrong, IMHO DIego should be our main target. He is genius and I dont think any player would fit better to our squad.

And CR coming means he will probably replace Salvio, who will be sold (since he is not included in the “inner” 10) – money will be used to fix our budget deficit.

Non-EU spot will be taken by Diego Costa, who will be backup for Falcao.

And we will see if any replacement for Diego will be coming. Maybe Jurado?

  • Lubo

Well I still hope that Toto will stay. He could also play the backup striker, when Costa can be swapped for Griezmann. Then Arda can move to Diego’s position (decent replacement I think), so the wings would be also covered.
To fix the budget there is Godín or Miranda (there were rumours about them). But that will make sense only if Caminero will be able to complete Botía’s transfer.
Anyway, I don’t want Toto to leave. His potential is enormous.

  • Dircil

agree with u Lubo. I dont want our club to sell Toto since I watched him played last season. And I prefer the board to retain Diego too. As for the case of Godin, selling him can bring us a decent amount of money to balance out the budget. For this transferring period, Botia and another worldclass DM signs such as Capoue are adequately good for us in case we wont sell Falcao

This is even more shit. I just don’t understand Real Madrid.
But its all just speculation. I hope its not true also with the links above i posted its just Speculation

  • Sam

Regarding Lass–I really don’t like that fella’s style.

Regarding Cristian Rodriguez…familiar face for Falcao to keep him happy?

Look at this all the stars in La liga That are AVAILABLE for a transfer and thievy Bifouma is a good player on that list!!

  • Dircil

@Randy: Thievy Bifouma born in 13 May 1992. wdh, I was born in the same date but 2 years earlier than him

  • leika

We have also been linked with Fabian of Guadalajara (Mexico) Anyone knows more about him?

  • Anthony

Former Galatasaray, Inter and NewCastle United player, Emre Belezoglu has also signed with Atletico Madrid for two years.

  • Anthony

Emre has his spot guaranteed at Atletico as long as he stays out of trouble, and healthy as he did in Fenerbahce during his tenure. When he remembers he is a football player, he is one of the best in his position in the world but he is also very controversial player. He needs to stay away from making comments to the press and Atletico will have an incredibly talented and effective player in its possesion.

  • Anthony

Think of him the defensive minded Maradona. He is still remembered at Inter. No wonder he was chosen the best player of the year in Inter at the time.

  • shay

    Is this official? about Emre?

  • Edletico

It is Shay, the news is on the official site

  • shay

Cool. Thanks Ed. Is this good for us?

  • falcao
  • Edletico

I think so, still plays for Turkey and outshines Sahin. Arda rates him. Free transfer, experienced and apparently a big game player. Will probably be used mostly from the bench. For me, this move could only be considered bad if he replaces Diego. If Diego returns, then he is a much better back up than Mario Suarez or Merida

  • palc

Only negative about the Emre signing is that he will limit Koke’s playing time.

  • Urban

Forget Diego guys, he is history. Unless we sell Falcao in the end he is not comming.

BTW I wouldnt mind Burak Yilmaz to complete our tirple turkish delight.

  • GS Fan 1905

    Hey Guys,

Emre, if he can keep his cool because he is very tempermental, will be an awesome addition to the midfield.

He can pull the strings with ease, he can play through balls with the best of ’em. He has a very decent long range shot and he can hit a freekick as well.

As for Burak Yilmaz, he likes to run channels, so if Atleti pick him up he can open up acres of space for Falcao by keeping a defender or two busy/distracted.

    Well, let’s see what happens.

  • Javi Lozoya

I know Fabián obviously because I watch the Mexican league. He is very talented, watch his magnificent goals against Barca, but he is very inconsistent as well, but only with his club Chivas. With the Mexican team he has performed greatly. He is playing the Toulon Tournament and has scored 6 goals in only 3 matches despite the fact he is not a striker. He is without a doubt the tournament’s best player. He is and offensive midfielder, can play behind the striker as well. He is versatile also. He would be cheap but he doesn’t have an EU passport. I would’ve prefer him ahead of Emre.

  • Javi Lozoya

  • solari

I’ve always wanted to see Cristian Rodriguez in Atléti…
I feel so happy of that, am so pleased 🙂
and I’d love to see Capel and Banega ^^
