Atlético takes part in the prestigious Andalusian tournament as its most successful participant, having won the event a record eight times. The rojiblancos will kickoff against organisers and Segunda División B side Cádiz CF today at 22:00 (GMT/UTC + 01:00 hour).
We were last invited in 2003 when, motivated by our promotion back to the first division, we defeated Málaga 4-2 in a penalty shootout after a 0-0 draw to clinch the Carranza Trophy.
According to Marca, Manager Quique Sánchez Flores has enlisted the following players for the competition:
Goalkeepers: Iago Herrerín and Joel Robles
Defenders: Juan Valera, Leandro Cabrera, Tomas Ujfalusi, Luis Perea, Juanito, Filipe Luis and Antonio López
Midfielders: Alberto Perea, Ignacio Camacho, Paulo Assuncao, Raúl García, Mario Suárez, Simao Sabrosa, José Antonio Reyes, Koke, Keko and José Manuel Jurado;
Forwards: Sergio Agüero, Diego Costa, Ibrahima and Eduardo Salvio.
Kun returned to the team Saturday, but is not expected to make an appearance in today’s game given that he has only been in training for less than a week.
Left out of the squad for the tournament were the Uruguayans Diego Forlán and newcomer Diego Godín. David de Gea, Álvaro Domínguez and Fran Mérida are all away on international duty after joining up with their Spanish U21 team-mates this afternoon ahead of their tie with Finland on 11 August.
