La Liga: Levante 2 – 0 Atlético

Two early strikes enough for Levante to seal the deal against Atlético

Levante striker Arouna Kone scores against Atletico Madrid

Koné celebrates his goal (Marca)

One would think that Atlético would be used to the early kick offs after starting at noon the past few weeks, but it appeared the team was still asleep when referee Iglesias Villaneva set the game in motion.

Within ten minutes we were trailing by two goals after great assists by Barkero and two uncontested headers.

The early strikes decided the game in Levante’s favour: 2-0.

Just 55 seconds had been played when Valdo perfectly headed the ball in off the post to give Levante a dream start.

In the 10th minute Arouna Koné headed in an excellent free kick by Barkero to make it 2-0 to the home side.

Atlético looked to do something back through Eduardo Salvio, but the Argentine’s volley from a corner was blocked.

After half an hour Valdo went on a dazzling run on the right wing and assisted Barkero, but the Basque couldn’t keep his shot down and missed the target.

Early in the second half Arda Turan slid a ball just wide after Munúa spilled a cross from the right side. It was one of few opportunities for Atleti who had only come close to the goalkeeper through set pieces.

A minute later we created our first chance from open play when Arda forced Munúa to a save with a shot from distance.

Radamel Falcao had started the game on the bench and was brought on in the second half as Simeone’s last resort to turn the game around. The striker, who is nursing an injury, twice received the ball from the wing, but on both occasions his angle was too difficult to head on target.

In the meantime Eduardo Salvio and Mario Suárez, among others, picked up bookings which rules them out for our upcoming derby with Real Madrid through suspension.

Shortly before the end Miranda received his second yellow card of the match and was sent off, also making him available for Wednesday’s clash with our city rivals.

In the final minute Munúa held on to his clean sheet by making a fantastic save to deny Falcao, who was on the end of a Diego free kick.

Line-up: Courtois; Juanfran, Miranda, Godín, Filipe; Diego, Mario (“69 Fran Mérida), Gabi, Arda (“79 Pizzi); Adrián and Salvio (“66 Falcao).

Goals: 1-0 Valdo (“1); 2-0 Koné (“10)

So much for the SimeOne miracle. This was one we had to win but we could do nothing
And to top it off we lost several players for the next game against Madrid
After our glorious victory in Germany things look very bleak again

We are having a strange season. We are great in Europe and could win it, but in the league we lack that spark to create chances. We wont get CL now, so lets focus on the europa league and try and finish in the top 6 in la liga.

Things went wrong in that match. Things could go wrong in our previous match against Getafe, but they didn’t. We have to be more efficient. We must get a goal when having only half a chance. That ‘s what Cholo said a couple of months ago. We need more time I guess… It ‘s more likely to qualify for europa league by winning it, than finishing 5th or 6th in la liga. So, we really have to focus on the games against Valencia.

    typical rollercoaster

I think we play like manzano ‘s team again .

So disappointing! We always suck in La Liga. I got a feeling we will win again in Europa League though… We must destroy Valencia in Calderon and have a clean sheet to avoid any resistance in the return leg in Mestalla.

    Atleti through thick and thin!
    Aupa Atleti!

  • Thats it i cannot see champions league football next season.
We can’t do it and it is our AWAY FORM IN THE LEAGUE that is causing that. No expectation from me again for any AWAY match IN THE LEAGUE

I’ve watched the whole game and now I can confess that I haven’t seen such a disgusting game for a long time. Only Filipe, Juanfran and Falcao played good and Diego tried to orchestrate, but too often he preferred to act individually – so did Arda, while our wing-backs were good in the attack, but poor in the defense, giving too much space for Levante attackers, eventually causing Miranda’s red card, by the way. Mario, Miranda, Godin were awful, Adrian, Salvio and Pizzi – non-existent, while Courtois played rather average match. Merida should have played from the beginning (but he wasn’t good also, loosing the ball too often), Gabi tried hard, but often he looked as he had worked all the week without a day-off (so did all the footballers). I think that Simeone needs to rotate the team, and now I am not sure tat he is so good as he was suspected to be.

  • Hey guys can diego costa play ahainst us when we play Rayo Vallecano?????

  • falcao

I think our players are tired, we have very tight schedule
Cholo did not lose any of games in Europa League we played away niether draw……but in La Liga we have a problem which Cholo must solve it

  • so can diego costa play versus us for the game versus vallecano???? BTW sorry for my bad english before

yh Randy, you are allowed to play agaibst your parent club in spain, however in england(and other leagues) this is not the case. Joel, Costa, Pulido and Pacheo can all play against us.

  • Javi Lozoya

Diego Costa didn’t play against us because he was injured, and I doubt he and our loaned players are gonna play against us. There should be a clause to stop them from playing although I’m not really sure.
About Simeone’s effect fading away it’s not his fault we lost against Levante. Simeone doesn’t play. He is a great coach but we have a very short and good squad, not a great one. Simeone can make the team work but he can’t do magic and playing the Europa League is making the team exhausted.
Poor planning and a mediocre board keep Atleti away from having a great season. It’s always the same thing. Simeone is not a part of that, ad he is doing what he can with what he has.

It is clearly squad depth that is the issue here, our younger and fringe players obviously aren’t convincing Cholo enough for him to start them if he has to play Diego and Falcao both not at full fitness 3 times a week and players that look tired! The way we play under Cholo is very demanding physically and has worked very well at times, but we don’t have the strength in depth for 3 games a week! We can’t just expect CL football straight away from him, especially not with the current run in the EL, hopefully, given some cash in the summer and let to make his own decisions on who stays, leaves and comes in we can comfortably qualify for CL next year and have another decent run in the EL!

Everytime I watch with my son, we lose. I’m going to just show him the highlights from now on, so I don’t ruin his youth.
