La Liga: Atlético 3 – 0 Getafe

Comfortable win at the Vicente Calderón for Atlético

Atletico Madrid forward Eduardo Salvio scores against Getafe

Salvio celebrates his golazo (Marca)

After an equal first half Atlético brushed aside Getafe with a strong second half performance.

We beat our neighbours 3-0 with goals by Salvio, Diego Ribas and Falcao.

According to Diego Simeone, Atleti’s tight schedule is no excuse not to give our all, but the coach did decide to rest some of his key players. Miranda, Godín, Koke and Adrián were left out, while Diego entered in the starting line-up for the first time since returning from his injury.

Also making a comeback was Tiago, who took a place on the bench after missing the last seven games.

In the sunny Madrid afternoon there was also the debut of our new shirt sponsor, with the players displaying the logo of the Rixos Hotels chain on the front of their shirts.

Prior to the match, Atlético and Getafe were tied in the league table with 39 points and in the first half the visitors showed that they weren’t afraid of their opponents as the encounter in the Vicente Calderón was an open game. The boys normally in blue but today in very bright yellow played far up the pitch in possession and proved to be dangerous with their quick and inventive forwards.

Although Diego and Falcao had been active in the opening part, Atleti had created few opportunities and struggled to combine in the final third. Maybe that’s why in the 24th minute Filipe, instead of looking for a midfielder, decided to cross the ball directly in the box. Far from goal Eduardo Salvio leaped above his opponent and directed his header to the far end of the goal. The ball was far out of Moyá’s reach and beautifully went in off the post and into the top corner.

Getafe’s Diego Castro had a big opportunity to tie the score shortly after Salvio gave us the lead, but the winger headed just wide.

After the break Filipe did well to get past his man and cross to Falcao, but the Colombian failed to control the ball and his shot was blocked. Another cross came in where Falcao did beat the ‘keeper but Miguel Torres cleared the ball off the line.

Atleti put on the pressure at the start of the second half and seemed to score another goal, but Falcao’s succesful bicycle kick was correctly called back for offside.

After an hour of play the Rojiblancos got the goal they had been chasing since half time. Diego launched a counterattack and set up Falcao on the wing, who crossed back to the Brazilian. Diego, the best player on the pitch on Sunday, was first denied by Moyá and the crossbar, but he had no trouble converting the rebound to make it 2-0.

In the second half Getafe had absolutely nothing to say and Atleti increased their lead even further in the 77th minute. Substitutes Koke and Adrián combined and from close range Radamel Falcao walked it in to make it three.

The comfortable lead allowed Simeone to rest our star trio Diego, Arda and Falcao and enabled him to give Tiago some minutes to get back in form.

The only bad news from this game is the yellow card that Koke picked up, as the youngster will now be suspended for our trip to Valencia next week when we play against Levante.

Line-up: Courtois; Juanfran, Perea, Domínguez, Filipe; Diego (“65 Adrián), Gabi, Mario, Arda (“71 Koke); Salvio and Falcao (“78 Tiago).

Goals: 1-0 Salvio (“24); 2-0 Diego (“62); 3-0 Falcao (“77)

Nice Falcaoesque goal by Salvio. Nice result. OK play. Could have easily gone wrong.

  • shlomgar

Third gial was Juanfran assist if I’m not mistaken.

Clear victory! We looked good out there, you won’t notice it in statistics but we controlled the game and gave them hell (fouls 20-8 but only one yellow card). Makes me happy to show my BFFs, Barca Fan Friends, that possession is not everything.

Diego was A mazing, like he wasn’t out for more than one game. Salvio, Mario and Dominguez got some well needed morale boost prior to their Hannover mission. All in all, Simeone’s mastermind is working over time and doing it well.

im happy with this results. Now lets finish off hannover.

  • leika

yeah the black box of the logo doesn’t match our shirt, why not just a simple text over the stripes

  • Very good result. Need at least 5 more of that and we are BACK on course for a champions league place. Come on you can do it.
    Aupa Atleti!!!!!!!!!

  • leika

what games have we got left?

  • @Leika
umm… levante next, then real madrid, followed by rayo vallecano, villareal, real sociedad, betis espanyol and malaga. And well…the Europa league tie versus Hannover and if we qualify, valencia or az alkmaar.

  • The fixture aren’t in order by the way.
    😉

  • ratchet

    in the correct order:
    levante(a)
    real madrid(h)
    vallenco(a)
    espanyol(h)
    betis(a)
    sociedad(h)
    malaga(h)
    villareal(a)

Europa league (if we get to the final)
    hannover(a)
    semi-final first leg(h)
    semi-final second leg(a)
    final

so at most, about 12 matches in 7/8 weeks.

  • starvs

    levante(a) – Win
    real madrid(h) – Loss
    vallenco(a) – Tie
    espanyol(h) – Win
    betis(a) – Win
    sociedad(h) – Win
    malaga(h) – Tie
    villareal(a) – Tie

Thats my conservative prediction (assuming we advance in EL) which would net us 14 points and leave us with 57 points, and not enough for CL given Malaga has 47 currently. So we have to overachieve my conservativeness, which is certainly possible as every game we have is winnable aside from Real; and I’m not ready to through Cholo’s first Derby chances away entirely before it happens, but its obviously as unlikely as always.

What I’m really trying to say is, let’s fucking win out…

  • Dircil

any time I watch the club play, they all win. Hopefully, they can at least wont lose next match, cuz i’m gonna watch it. Srr for my bad English

  • skillz

Simeone is doing brilliant so far.

  • davidsf

Let’s not talk about CL spots b/c everytime we do, we lose 🙁

Let’s talk about winning the Europa league and making sure we get up for each and every game in la liga.

  • leika

I think the most important games will then be vs Levante and Malaga.

  • Beating Levente away will make us edge closer to CL cos i have strong feelings we can beat Real for the first time in more than 13 atempt and also think home advantage and luck wil also be own our side.
GO ATLETICO U CAN DO IT!!!
