After an equal first half Atlético brushed aside Getafe with a strong second half performance.
We beat our neighbours 3-0 with goals by Salvio, Diego Ribas and Falcao.
According to Diego Simeone, Atleti’s tight schedule is no excuse not to give our all, but the coach did decide to rest some of his key players. Miranda, Godín, Koke and Adrián were left out, while Diego entered in the starting line-up for the first time since returning from his injury.
Also making a comeback was Tiago, who took a place on the bench after missing the last seven games.
In the sunny Madrid afternoon there was also the debut of our new shirt sponsor, with the players displaying the logo of the Rixos Hotels chain on the front of their shirts.
Prior to the match, Atlético and Getafe were tied in the league table with 39 points and in the first half the visitors showed that they weren’t afraid of their opponents as the encounter in the Vicente Calderón was an open game. The boys normally in blue but today in very bright yellow played far up the pitch in possession and proved to be dangerous with their quick and inventive forwards.
Although Diego and Falcao had been active in the opening part, Atleti had created few opportunities and struggled to combine in the final third. Maybe that’s why in the 24th minute Filipe, instead of looking for a midfielder, decided to cross the ball directly in the box. Far from goal Eduardo Salvio leaped above his opponent and directed his header to the far end of the goal. The ball was far out of Moyá’s reach and beautifully went in off the post and into the top corner.
Getafe’s Diego Castro had a big opportunity to tie the score shortly after Salvio gave us the lead, but the winger headed just wide.
After the break Filipe did well to get past his man and cross to Falcao, but the Colombian failed to control the ball and his shot was blocked. Another cross came in where Falcao did beat the ‘keeper but Miguel Torres cleared the ball off the line.
Atleti put on the pressure at the start of the second half and seemed to score another goal, but Falcao’s succesful bicycle kick was correctly called back for offside.
After an hour of play the Rojiblancos got the goal they had been chasing since half time. Diego launched a counterattack and set up Falcao on the wing, who crossed back to the Brazilian. Diego, the best player on the pitch on Sunday, was first denied by Moyá and the crossbar, but he had no trouble converting the rebound to make it 2-0.
In the second half Getafe had absolutely nothing to say and Atleti increased their lead even further in the 77th minute. Substitutes Koke and Adrián combined and from close range Radamel Falcao walked it in to make it three.
The comfortable lead allowed Simeone to rest our star trio Diego, Arda and Falcao and enabled him to give Tiago some minutes to get back in form.
The only bad news from this game is the yellow card that Koke picked up, as the youngster will now be suspended for our trip to Valencia next week when we play against Levante.
