Passport problems might force exits

Two players might have to leave if passports aren't fixed in time

With Godín’s signing looking to be imminent, Atlético face a new problem; only three players that don’t have a European passport can be registered to play for us this season in la Liga.

Currently our selection includes four “foreigners” in Agüero, Cabrera, Diego Costa and Salvio. The rule excludes Africans, so we won’t have to worry about Ibrahima.

Diego Godín would be our fifth player without a European passport, meaning two have to go.

The club has applied for a Spanish passport for Agüero a couple of months ago, and hopefully he’ll receive his papers before 1 September, when registration closes.

AtléticoFans has read rumours that Godín has also applied for a Spanish passport, after spending four years in Spain with Villarreal, but we cannot confirm this or quote any reliable sources.

Assuming one or two players need to be offloaded, it would seem to make sense to loan out Leandro Cabrera. The Uruguayan defender has a lot of competition for a spot in the team and could gain some experience by going on loan to another club in la Liga.

Who would you prefer to keep in the team?

  • Of course, Costa and Cabrera. Both on loan or w/ buy-back option. (Costa seems to be a good weight in deals with smaller clubs.)

Hopefully we can get a passport for Kun and then for Godín if he comes and this won’t be an issue 🙂 I guess Cabrera will have to be loaned out then possibly Diego Costa or Salvio. I like both players but if I had to choose then it would be Diego Costa.

  • Get a passport for Kun and loan Cabrera. In my opinion it’s the best choice.

  • From what I know Godin is going to get a spanish passport quite soon himself

  • Derek Maaijen

I think Cabrera should be loaned either way. We’ve got two leftbacks ahead of him and Álvaro who can play there, while there are also plenty of centre-backs. To let him go on loan is the best idea

Agüero’s papers were filed months ago, I do hope he’ll get them in time.

  • Enrique

I hope there is no intention to sell Agüero, otherwise I don’t understand how we have suddenly so much money for new transfers. I hope i’m mistaken.

  • Derek Maaijen

Enrique, we haven’t spent that much money yet, because the transfers of Godín and Filipe will be paid in installments. This summer, it seems we’ll only spend about €3m on Godín, €6m for Filipe, €1.8m for Mario Suárez and €1.5m for Diego Costa, for a total of a little over €12m. Considering that we sold Roberto for €8.5m, our spendings aren’t that outrageous.

Great too know…that’s very relieving Derek. I was also very pleased with Godín’s final agreed sale price. Hard to be upset with Pitarch and co. right now.

  • Enrique

    Hi Derek,
I see your point, but you have to add the millions paid for players who were signed last year and the previous one.
Probably the amounts of money they paid for salvio, asenjo and some others, were splitted too.
Still I am very glad with the team atletico is building.
